Shepton Mallet memories

A changing townscape

Memories of Shepton Mallet.
I was born in Kilver Street, Shepton Mallet just two years before the Second World War was declared and have drawn upon my family and my own memories to produce 18 books of local history on the town and the surrounding area. Little had changed in the townscape during the previous 100 years, and it was until the 1960s that widescale demolition and rebuilding took place. In many cases this erased much of the 19th century built townscape. Should anyone like to know more about my town's history I would be glad to help, or visit my website: freddavis.co.uk .

I live in Shepton Mallet

I was Shepton Mallet Carnival Queen and it was very good to do the job.  My Granny and Grampy lived in Shepton Mallet and my dad and uncle were born in Shepton Mallet as well my mum who would've been the Shepton Mallet Carnival Queen in 1965. Pete and I are building a shed down Darshill. It used to be a pig barn and it is going to be wonderful when it is finished.  We will have to take photos of the shed now and before.  I got the map of Darshill and it shows us that the shed that me and my friend done is on the map

Extracts From Shepton Mallet & Somerset books

Shepton Mallet, the Cross 1899

The Cross 1899. Five miles east of Wells in the eastern Mendips, Shepton Mallet was a prosperous wool manufacturing town, which declined when northern England’s Industrial Revolution got under way. The fine market cross at the entrance to the Market Place has an elaborate medieval polygonal centre, with three storeys of arched niches; the crocketed pinnacle emerges from a plainer arched surrounding structure of about 1700 (all was rebuilt in 1841).

Shepton Mallet, High Street 1899

The High Street approaches the Market Place from the south, slightly downhill beyond the crossroads in the middle distance. The west side of the Market Place is in the distance. Most of the houses have Georgian and early 19th-century fronts of harmonious proportions and scale, although there is a grander later Victorian bank building at the crossroads.

Shepton Mallet, High Street c1955

A Showerings van and shop can be seen here on the right. This local family made cider and beer and delivered it door to door. Promotion of their Babycham perry in the 1950s made the four Showering brothers wealthy. In a 1970s redevelopment, car parks were built behind the shops, and the street was pedestrianised.

Shepton Mallet, the Square and Cross c1965

This cross was built in the 13th-century market place in around 1500, and was used for the sale of butter, eggs and chickens. Adjacent were ‘shambles’ or stalls - the base of one still remains. Outside the Bell Inn was a stage for preaching on market days.

Shepton Mallet, Town Street 1899

In the 19th century, various industries were established to replace the wool cloth ones; these included brewing, with the splendidly named Anglo-Bavarian Brewery being established near Commercial Road. From the north-west corner of Market Place, Town Street descends the hill past a drapers, a dairy utensil manufacturer and a shoe shop, all three displaying their wares.
