Livin' good

During the 1960s while stationed at RAF Bentwaters I, with my family, lived at #6 Broad Road, in Wickham Market. Our landlord was Richard Upson, who with his family lived on one side of the house and we occupied the other side. Our neighbour was Police Sergeant Alan Airey who has since passed away.
My time spent in England was without doubt the happiest time of my life.
If we could only turn back time!!

William Gildersleeve & Thomas Robert Gildersleeve

In the year 1492 William Gildersleeve and in 1544 Thomas Robert Gildersleeve were born in Witnesham, Suffolk, England.
Gildersleeves first found in Norfolk area where they were anciently seated as Lords of the Manor.
If anyone knows any Gildersleeves (Spelling variations of the family name includes Gildersleeve, Gildersleve, Gilderslieve, Gildensleeve, Gildensleve, Sildsleeve, Gildsleve, Guildersly).

The Black and White Cottages

Easton, Old House c1955

My great grandparents, my nanna (and all of her siblings)and my mother all lived in this house. I'm not sure of the timeframe but it was for a number of years. My mom had many fond memories and stories of the crinkly wall across the street, as well as the 5 Bridges. My family name is Harvey. My grandfather and his family also grew up in Easton. His family name is Last. I visit Easton everytime I go back to England. It is one of my favourite places in the whole world. I tend to take pictures each time I go as well. Time seems to have stood still in Easton. ...read more here

St. Lawrence Street 1960s

Ipswich, St Lawrence Street 1921

Back in the 1960s there was a beautiful Magnolia tree oposite the church in front of a solicitor's office in St. Lawrence Street.
Forty years have passed and I live the other side of the world.
I wonder if that tree is still there.

Extracts From Woodbridge & Suffolk books

Woodbridge, the Thoroughfare 1894

Although quite narrow and winding, this is the main street of the town, stretching for nearly a mile, and running parallel with the River Deben.

Woodbridge, the Bell Inn 1894

The Bell Inn (now the Bell and Steelyard) stands in New Street. The covered hoist is a steelyard, used for weighing grain wagons from the early 17th century to the 1880s. Capable of weighing up to 2.5 tons, it would weigh the wagon before going to market, and again when it returned empty. No doubt the day’s trade would be celebrated over a pint in the inn!

Woodbridge, from Church Tower 1894

At the bottom of the picture is the Bull Hotel, host to Alfred Lord Tennyson in 1876, when he was Poet Laureate. Another well-known poet lived nearby - Edward Fitzgerald, who translated the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

Woodbridge, the Beach 1898

This was taken from Buss’s Dock looking down river. Children are playing at the water’s edge and on Ferry Dock; boats rest in the channel; a yacht is being painted; and people relax in the ornate shelter. The Woodbridge Regatta was held here intermittently since 1838. The Deben Sailing Club and the Woodbridge Rowing Club from 1906 made it an annual event.
