Tyne And Wear memories
Boy from the Slums
I was born on the 28th March 1947, into an existing family of 5 siblings in a one-up one-down decaying terraced house of 12 Russell Street, Teams, Gateshead, just off Upton Street, near to the coke works, the gas works, the rope works and every other kind of filthy polluting business on the banks of the Tyne. We ended up as a family of 8 children by the 1950s. My father was Leslie George Bull and my mother - Isabella Gattis Chilvers.
The word "Poverty" was part of their wedding vows.
In the back lanes of these rat infested dwellings we played mouse chasing and "liggies"in the "gundi". The area was so bad the rats wore white overalls.

The main shopping area of Newburn
I was 12 yrs old when this picture was taken and I remember it very well. The photo was taken from the war memorial looking down to the railway station, the footbridge is clearly visible in the centre of the picture. On the left of the photo the building was a bank, I believe it was Lloyds but being penniless we didn't have a bank account. Following on down the street the first shop was Proudlocks the drapers - further down was the billiard hall owned by an Italian family - Marchetti who also owned the adjacent ice cream shop where Mr Marchetti made the ice cream on the premises, his son Dino ran the billiard hall of which I was ...read more here

Memories of First Dates
When I was young and very green! , no let’s say not worldly wise! Even know I could die with embarrassment looking back on my attempts to emulate the big screen stars.
My Dad owned a lot of cinemas and naturally I spent a lot of time in them, so learning how it was done (kissing that is!) The first kiss I had makes me still cringe, I spent 2 minutes kissing her bottom lip and chin before I realized I was in the wrong place, the next one I kissed I thought she was going to be ill when lips glued together she opened her mouth I panicked and ran off as I ...read more here

ON BEING A CINEMA OR THEATRE MANAGER
ON BEING A CINEMA & THEATRE MANAGER!
Having written the last blog on Children’s Matinees so many memories flitted through my brain, so I had to write them down! And no doubt I shall add to them over the weeks.
Going back to the old Corona at Felling, I just remembered that I was very young fresh out of the Navy and full of my own importance! And didn’t know anything! My first day there was hard to forget, I went into the stalls and walked down towards the stage and this cleaner called Annie came out of the toilet she had been cleaning and shouted at me to get off her still wet mopped floor, ...read more here

Extracts From Whickham & Tyne And Wear books
Whickam is not noted for much save that it was the birthplace in 1748 of William Shield, musician and composer, who rose to become the Master of the King’s Music. He was honoured at his death by being buried alongside the great and the good, (and the bad and the mad) in Westminster Abbey.
