Memorial Sundial

Far Headingley, St Chad's Church c1960

In 1942 I was a student at the Leeds School of Architecture. The head, Mr. J. Allen, was commissioned to design a memorial in the form of a sundial to be erected at the side of the drive leading up to St. Chad's Church. He designd the sundial on a circular stone platform consisting of three steps and on the riser of the middle one there was an inscription relating to the person being commemorated. He asked me to draw out, in full size, all the lettering for the stonemason to use as a template. He chose me because I had just got top marks for an exercise in Roman lettering. I have forgotten the wording and should be pleased to ...read more here

Anticipating a Memory of Kirkstall Abbey

In among my family genealogical records is a note that an ancestor of mine named Richard de Berecrofte gave lands to Kirkstall Abbey in the 12th century.  I am SO looking forward to visiting the Abbey next year and taking my own pictures of it!
It is my understanding that my ancestors left the Cliviger area about 1650 for Boston, MA.

I am retiring next year and have lived most of my life in Pennsylvania, USA.  My daughter, Mary, is in the Air Force at Lakenheath AFB, and I will be staying with her. I would be happy to answer any questions.

Happy Day!

The Norfolk family living in Adel and Harewood

Adel, the Church of St John the Baptist, South Porch 1888

Just look at this truly MAGNIFICENT arch over the church doorway. My own interest in this parish is because my family name is Norfolk and so many of my family were farmers, millers and general agicultural workers around Adel, Harewood and Dunkeswick going back to the early 1600s - and probably beyond.

Extracts From Far Headingley & West Yorkshire books

Far Headingley, St Chad's Church c1960

This splendid church was conceived by Sir Edmund Beckett, who as well as being a barrister and amateur architect designed the clock mechanism of Big Ben. St Chad’s slender spire soars over the surrounding rooftops and countryside. Chad was a Northumbrian monk appointed bishop of Ite Mercians in 669. He built his cathedral at Lichfield where he died of plague in 672. Chad converted two sons of King Wulfhere of Mercia to Christianity.

Ilkley, Cow and Calf Rocks 1921

It is well worth the effort to climb up these rocks: you’re on top of the world, if a little weary and overheated. Luckily, just below refreshments are to hand at the Cow and Calf Inn, formerly known as the Highfield.

Ilkley, view of Swastika Stone 1914

In this photograph you can see the top of the Semon Convalescent Home just beyond the reservoir. A fair walk westwards then brings you to the Swastika Stone, which is unique in this country. Other examples have been found in Tossene in Sweden and Mycenae in Greece and all depict fertility and religious symbols. The council placed the iron railing around the site in 1913.

Ilkley, the Moors 1914

Up above the Cow and Calf rocks is more evidence of quarrying, but in this photograph the heather softens the scene for the Edwardian picnickers taking in the valley view, top right.

Ilkley, Denton Park from the Cow and Calf Rocks 1914

This young man looks out from between these famous rocks towards the magnificent estate of Denton Park.
