The falls

Penpont, Cairn Mill c1960

This dam on the river Scaur would be erected to power the mill, the big building to the right of the falls of which is now gone as is the dam
When I was a boy water was taken from the left and used to power a turbine to generate electricty for Capenoch big house,it was not a very good light,it was I think only 110volts
When the river was in flood it was an awesome sight to see the water powering over the rocks and the salmon jumping having been waiting in the pools downriver for a flood to get upriver to spawn

Mr Inglis

Penpont, the Manse c1955

It was in early 1965 I with the young lady who was to become my wife went to see the minister Rev John H.A.Inglis at this manse to see if he would marry us,this he duly did on the 25th of September of that year and we are still together 42 years later
The manse is now privately owned,a new manse was built a few years ago and it may olso be privately owned, as the minister lives in Thornhill now, being in charge of several parishes.

I have lots of memories playing there as a child, watching my Papa bowling, or my dad, John Morrison and my uncle Keith Morrison play cricket at Castlemilk. My dad and uncle both worked for Castlemilk as mechanics. I remember having to be dragged to school by a boy who live close by, his name was Robert Davidson, I believe he is a policeman now. We lived at Beechwood by Castlemilk and I loved to play with Linda Hunter whose grandparents lived next door. I remember exploring the castle grounds and finding overgrown gardens full ...read more here

Extracts From Moffat & Dumfriesshire books

Moffat, High Street 1890

At this time Moffat was one of Scotland’s chief inland resorts, boasting several hotels and private boarding houses. In Victorian times it was popular as a spa town, with visitors flocking to take the waters. During the season, the town’s population of just more than 2,000 would more than double. In 1878 the massive 300-room Hydropathic Hotel was built. It was equipped with the latest facilities, including vapour and mineral baths.
