Edinburgh memories

St James Church, Leith,  Edinburgh EH6

I now live in Houston, Texas, USA. My birth certificate has a written record of my being baptized in St James Church in Leith, but I cannot find any record of the church, which was near Gt Junction Street, Leith. Thanks. Morty Grant, born in Lapicide Place, Leith.

My father was a Drummer Boy

Edinburgh, the Castle from Johnston Terrace 1897

My father was a Drummer Boy in Edinburgh Castle when he was 14 in 1915. He threw the sergeant's false teeth out of the window by mistake, he thought it was just a cup of water. But next day when the sergeant picked up the cup and said where's my ---------- teeth , he knew. He did not own up. A mystery never solved.

Extracts From Edinburgh & Midlothian books

Edinburgh, from the Castle 1897

In the foreground are the buildings of the Royal Institute and the National Gallery, with Princes Street on the left behind the Scott Monument. Calton Hill can be seen in the distance.

Edinburgh, from the Castle 1897

The waters of Nor’ Loch once flowed over the area now occupied by Princes Gardens, the railway, and Princes Street, and together with an area of marshland formed a part of the castle and the old city’s defences. The picture gives us an indication of the size of the loch.

Edinburgh, from the Calton Hill 1897

In the foreground is the castellated bulk of the prison. The old Calton burial ground just beyond is where the philosopher David Hume is buried.

Edinburgh, the National Gallery 1897

The collection included paintings of the Spanish and Italian Schools, and the British were represented by artists such as Gainsborough. The annual Exhibition of the Scottish Academy was one of the highlights of the year.

Edinburgh, Princes Street, looking west 1897

It was possible to keep healthy on Princes Street. The Edinburgh Cafe at number 70 did not serve alcohol, and there was a Turkish baths at number 90. For those with a sweet tooth, Edinburgh rock was available at Ferguson’s.
