I have a similar photo to this one ref 32487 in an old photo album of my great grandfather's. His maternal grand-parents were the Warder of Chepstow Castle ( George Morrey) This album is now being returned to Wales and will be given to Chepstow Museum for their archive collection. My great-grandfather's name was Edgar Howe Salmon, my father's name was Edgar Striguil Salmon.

Raglan - Castle Street
My childhood memories of Raglan are indelible in my mind. I lived with my Aunt and Uncle (Bessie and Ernie Morgan) at No 3 Castle Street during the war years. I well remember my first day at school, sitting on the obelisk at the junction of Chepstow Road, being chased by the geese down the Chepstow Road, 'helping' my uncle pump the organ, the harvest festivals, Roy Silverthorne's voice resounding around the church, sergeant Needs and his alsation, the brook, the castle, the wonderful smell of Mrs Hook's and the Powells bakery, Rhwylas farm, which is totally responsible for my love of dairy farming (although I was born 17 miles out of London). Round House
My Father Henry (Jim) Griffiths lived with his eight brothers and sisters in the Round house, which I think was up the ally next to the Postoffice. His mother was Alice Griffiths, she brought up all these children on her own. I wonder if anyone has a photo of the round house?

Extracts From Monmouth & Gwent books
This gate is a Norman structure dating from 1262, and it is a rare example of a fortified gateway on a bridge.

This is a superb view of the mill. We can clearly see
the mill race and weir. Note also the spire of the
church in the centre of the picture.

This is a dramatic example of a stratified rock formation apparently teetering on the edge of a precipice and
looking out over the valley beyond.

The Shire Hall was built in 1724; the statue
below the clock face is of Henry V, placed
there in 1792. It was in this very hall that John
Frost and his fellow Chartists were tried in
1839 - they were
initially condemned to
death, but this sentence
was eventually
commuted to
transportation. The
statue to the front of
the building is of C S
Rolls, one of the
founders of the Rolls-
Royce car company,
who lived at nearby
Hendre and was killed
in a flying accident in 1910.

The building on the right is the Overmonnow Post Office, advertising a Parcel Post service and with the built-in post box to the left of the window. Note the hanging sign on the left advertising the Rising Sun.
