My Childhood memories of Menai Bridge

Menai Bridge, Suspension Bridge 1890

My father was born in Talwrn near Llangefni and each year we would go by train to Liverpool and then go to the pier head and board St Tudno which sailed at 10 30 am, dropping people off about 12 in Llandidno then onto Menai Bridge, where we arrived around 2pm. Bethesda memories

Bethesda, the Lake, Nant Ffrancon Pass c1960

I used to rock climb in the area during the 1960's with my friends.
Not that I was a good climber, but I loved the rugged freedom of the mountains. I also have memories of a young girl from Gerlan who was very nice to me. Her name was Sylvia.

Extracts From Penrhyn Castle & Gwynedd books

Penrhyn Castle, from the Park c1883

The magnificent early 19th-century mock-Norman castle is shown here photographed from the park. It was built by the Pennant family on the proceeds of their huge Penrhyn slate quarries at Bethesda.

Penrhyn Castle, 1890

No expense was spared in creating Penrhyn, though local materials were used where practical. The marble came from Anglesey, timber from Pennant’s estates, and slate from his own quarries.

Penrhyn Castle, 1890

One mile east of Bangor off the present-day A55 stands Penrhyn Castle, a popular attraction with visitors to the area. Penrhyn, however, is not an old fortress, but a Victorian country house built on the grand scale. It was designed by Thomas Hopper for Dawkins Pennant, heir to a vast fortune made in the Welsh slate industry.
