The Clazeys - John and Isabella Oswald

John Clazey or Clazie was a miller. His wife was Isabella Oswald. Two of their sons were born in Etal: James Oswald Clazey and John Oswald Clazey (1819 and 1823). An older brother George, was born in Berwick-Upon-Tweed in 1815 or 1816.
GEorge left for the US in 1841...his son, James Oswald Clazey returned to become a schoolmaster...his son left in 1910 for the US....and here I am! Living in Florida. George was my great-great-great grandfather.

Holidays

Summer holidays riding bicycles, and horses, playing football on the Village Green or by Blindburn Hall, fishing under the bridge or wading through the water onto the stone island. Helping the village farmer walk the cows down for milking in the evenings and then walking them up to pasture in the morning, collecting eggs from the hen houses and stacking the bales of hay after the harvester had gone through. You would never believe this was a city lad's greatest joy. I must say this has taught me how to appreciate the simple things in life and that the folks from the North especially in and around the village of Wark are truly the greatest persons in the world, friendly, kind, ...read more here

Nethergrange

Alnmouth, the River Aln c1965

I remember being at Nethergrange with Jean Newbigin, and remember when she met her husband to be, and the building of their boat. In fact later , when we moved to Ravenslaw in Alnwich (in our third year) Jean and I shared a room as I was also a student at Alnwick Teacher Training College, living at Nethergrange in Alnmouth for our first two years. Like Jean I also met my husband to be in the village. He lived at Barndale Cottage, opposite the Hope and Anchor pub. I had many happy hours walking round this piece of coast, and painted watercolours of it several times. It is a stunningly beautiful place, with very friendly people.

Extracts From Holy Island & Berwickshire books

Holy Island, the Castle c1940

A Tudor fort sitting on top of Beblowe Crag, Lindisfarne was raised for defence against the Scots. Construction began in 1542 and was completed by 1550, using stone salvaged from the Benedictine priory. The only action the castle ever saw was when it was ‘captured’ from its garrison of just seven men by two Jacobites, who then flew their flag for a few hours before they were eventually thrown out. The castle was demilitarised in 1819. In 1902 it was converted into a private residence for Edward Hudson by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
