Barrow-In-Furness memories

Clog Makers

I have recently discovered that my grandfather Charles Alexander Parsons Hall was born illegitimately to Sarah Hall in Barrow in Furness c. 1885. Sarah's father George Hall was a clog maker employing two men at Anson Street in 1881. George was born in Stockport then worked in the Birmingham area before arriving in Barrow. My grandfather married in Salford and lived there the rest of his life. I would love to know where I could see any pictures of the area where the clog making business was or if anyone else has any information about it.

District Bank

My grandfather was Manager of the District Bank, Barrow-In-Furness during the 1950's and 1960's.
Please can somebody confirm if there was only one branch, as I have no idea of the address.

Extracts From Barrow-In-Furness & Cumbria books

Barrow-In-Furness, Duke Street 1893

Note the handcarts parked at the side of the street on the right, and the advertising hoardings on the side of the shop on the left of the picture, advertising among other things ‘Wheatleys Hop Bitters’.

Barrow-In-Furness, Piel Castle 1893

Piel is one of three islands off the coast at Barrow, and is crowned by the ruined remains of 14th-century Piel Castle, which boasts the largest medieval keep in the north-west of England. The ruined castle is seen here from the shore at South Point.

Barrow-In-Furness, Piel Castle 1893

The extensive remains of Piel Castle date from the early 14th century, and are located on Piel Island to the south of Barrow in Furness.

Barrow-In-Furness, Duke Street 1898

Note the tramlines in the street, and the industrial chimney on the left. The horse-drawn carts are parked outside the photographic shop of Hollis Wilkins, which advertises ‘Life-sized Heads, Direct from Life’.

Barrow-In-Furness, Dalton Road 1912

Pedestrians could walk down the middle of the street with impunity when this mid-morning photograph was taken just before the First World War. And photography was still so unusual that the camera turned more than a few heads among the Edwardian population.
