My Grandad Jim A memory of Coalville, Leicestershire My name is kerry & my favourite memory of coalville when i was younger is my Grandad, his name was Jim Watts. he was a coalminer for quite a few years & he was also Mayor of coalville. i remember going to the dog track with my dad, Alan & having to wait around for my grandad to come out. if i remember right after there he would go to the halfway house & 'just wet his lips' before he went home. i would have been about 9 or 10 years old at the time, i'm 38 now. i never thought i would hear myself say ' i can remember when all this was fields', i definately can hear myself saying it now. i live in leicester now but still have ties to coalville so go back to the place as often as i can. every time i visit it seems to lose more of its history as well as its landscapes. thats a great shame to a friendly little town that was a peaceful place but now its a concrete eye-sore that some people would call a business park. my sister (tracy) & her family still live in coalville Posted: 03/10/2006 23:30 by Kerry Tucker |

A memory of Whitwick, Leicestershire I want my dad to be remembered by all you that knew him he was born in coalville and spent his days growing up in witwick. The memories i have of my dad are all good he was always smiling and doing benny hill impresions.Iremember he always had a smile for everyone and everybody who he met loved him he was a bit of a jack the lad, everyone knew him and the family and the family knew everyone. My grandad James Robert Chambers worked in the coal mine in coalville i also think my uncle frank did also. My dad was head game keeper for ages and i remember living in switherland hall in Keepers cottage. We moved around alot but my dad would always go on about witwick and how much he loved it .Because we moved around a hell of alot when we went back to visit uncle frank,Charna,Carl and at the time Anty Sharon we always used to go to the white horse when willy white owned it ,my dad and him were really good mates we used to go in there every sunday with the locals it was a really good crack we had sing songs and the whol pub would join in it was a real good time.Irember cmy dad said to Willy once he would love to run the white horse one day and before he past away he did he was so proud it was unreal. He used to do a lot of charity fundraising he is the founder of woodstock vs witwick which is getting bigger and bigger each year it started off just being in the white horse and now it is to big of an event to hold it at the whitehorse anymore it is still up and running fundraising event every year 26th aug.My dad raised loads of money for the miners accociation but sadly a few years ago he lost his fightt to get through cancer i still cant believe he has gone he will always be in my heart and so will witwick and the white horse will always have a place there too. The Tillson's Home A memory of Witherley, Warwickshire A copy of the church photo was sent to me after I visited Witherley, on the trail of my Tillson ancestors. I was told that the middle house was where the Tillson's lived in the 1900s & before. My g/grandmother Ann Tillson was born in Witherley in 1856, I have her birth cert. but wondered if she was christened in St. Peters. Her father William Tillson according to the 1861 census was also born there in approx 1832. As I live in Wales is there anyone who could look at the Parish Records for me. William was a Domestic Servant, Gardener & by 1871 a Coachman. Did he work at the Hall?? Posted: 01/07/2006 15:31 by Shirley Harrison |

HEY UP ME DUCK A memory of Shepshed, Leicestershire 1953 were a special year for me and Great Britain - we climbed Everest, the Coronation, the parties. We had just moved into a new council estate, they were all prefrabricated houses after the war and supposed to only last a few years to help the housing shortage, but they are still standing. The estate had a green in the centre of it, we played football from dawn to dusk and met all my new mates. Last edited: 17/10/2008 09:01 by Keith Commonsa |

Long Whatton Primary School A memory of Huntworth, Somerset My name is Sandra Faure nee Cartlidge. I have wonderful memories of my childhood in Long Whatton, especially those when I was at the Primary School. Anyone remember Mrs Sharpe and Mrs Varnam? Mrs Sharpe was a lovely person and I feel that we all got a good start in life having her as our teacher. She taught us so many things apart from the normal lessons. I remember how happy she was when I became the first ever Queens Guide in Long Whatton. She even gave me five pounds, which in those days, was a LOT of money! I remember how we used to be able to play in the fields which were opposite my house (9, The Green). They were really happy days for me and my two brothers and all our friends.
