Extracts From Tavistock & Devon books
Tavistock is an ancient stannary town, renowned for its 10th-century
Benedictine abbey. It was once the largest producer of tin in Europe.
The delicate spire on the left was the Methodist church and is now
demolished. The local constable poses stiffly in the left foreground. He
may well have been a busy man—Tavistock had a reputation as a
somewhat rough mining community, and the centre on Saturday nights
could get a little lively.

Tavistock, one of Devon’s three original
Stannary Towns, lies on the banks of the
Tavy, which rises high on the moors near
Cut Hill and flows into the Tamar upstream
of Tamerton. In the background is the via-
duct of the Okehampton railway line.

Construction of the Guildhall was commenced
in 1848 on the orders of the 7th Duke, whose
statue stands in front. It was completed in 1864.
As well as filling the usual civic functions, it
was also the Police Station and the home of the
fire engine.

The hotel was originally the Abbey House, but was converted
to a hotel in 1822. The low building is the Bedford estate
office. Tavistock’s Goose fair is held in Bedford Square on the
second Wednesday in October.

This gently curving street is to the east of the town. This view, looking
back towards the town centre, shows both the Congregational and parish
churches. The latter has three spectacular aisles, one built for the ancient
Clothworkers’ Guild with a roof of finely-carved beams and bosses.
