Horden, the Church c1955 (ref: H185017a)
Year: 1940s HORDEN AND ST.MARY''S CHURCH New Added Today
My mum was the youngest of 5 children, all of whom had been born and brought up around Horden.  All the men in the family were miners.  The two elder sisters, Doris and Greta, were working away.  The family were also very musical.  During the war my Grandma Alice Mosey used to put on concerts and shows at the local Hall (Salvation Army I think) in which she, my mum and brothers used to perform, and my Grandad Mark Mosey who was in the ARP provided a blackout curtain for the stage!  My mum remembered a particular occasion when she was 11 (1943) when she sung, her brother Thomas "Totty" played the banjo and Wallace "Wally" played the piano.

My mother and father, my mother's brother and his intended were married at a joint wedding at St. Mary's sometime during April 1949.  She was only 17 and her name was Joan, my father's name was Thomas (Fisher).  My mother's brother was also named Thomas ("Totty") and was c.19 and his intended was named Joan!   The vicar who married them made the comment at the time that he would have to be sure to marry the right Joan to the right Thomas!  Sadly, I never met my Uncle Totty as he died two years or so later I believe, leaving a little girl named Ann.

I was born on 3rd Street, Horden in 1951.  In late 1953 we moved to the "new town" Peterlee for a few months where my brother was born in 1954.  (We followed my Uncle Wally who was the very first tenant in the "new" Peterlee.)   Both families then moved to Rugeley in Staffordshire (a new mining estate) but due to my Dad's deteriorating health we eventually finished up in London and joined my grandparents who'd moved from Cotsford Park some time before.  Dad sadly died when I was 6 in 1957.  My grandparents went to live in Coventry but we stayed in London.

Although whilst growing up in London we did occasionally visit the one aunt and her family who had remained in Horden and lived on 4th street until it was demolished (they eventually moved to Peterlee), it wasn't until a few years ago that mum and I made a "memory lane" visit and she took me round the places she remembered when young.  I have a photo of her standing outside St. Mary's Church; and one of me outside the house where I was born.  I had forgotten how close to the North Sea we had lived (literally yards away) and mum said that she often used to play there with her brothers when they were all young, and sometimes took me there in the summeras a young baby.  We found that the mine had been grassed over and all that remained was the airshaft wheel; she remembered sometimes going to the mine when a shift was over to meet her dad and brothers coming home.

Mum eventually remarried and died in April this year.

Someday I will go back again to see if I can find those places again.

  Year: 1920s Finding Grandpa
I am searching my dad's family. My dad's father William L Robinson died  of pnuemonia on 6th December 1924, when my dad was aged 1.  I understand that my grandpa lived in 7th street as a young man and worked as a Hewer. We have had no contact with Dad's birth family and would like to trace any relatives or ancestors of the family. William married my gran Catherine Robinson (nee Kelly) in 1923.

Loraine Jackson (nee Robinson).

Year: 1860s to Kareen Surtees
Hi Kareen.
I am interested in what you said about your mam and dad's burial and wedding.
The wedding of your parents I'm sure was Rev W.H. Walton before he died.
And when your father was buried in 1980 Fr Alan Bowser, I'm certain of this because I started serving on the alter around about that time. Hope I've been helpful to you. David Lee.
I started serving at the altar of St Mary's church. My memories were lovely ones of friends I knew over the years, my old priests that I have worked with, what a joy to do what I did. The places we visited as a parish. Oberamagou 1970 and 1980.  Everything we did was satisfying in many ways. My late mam and dad did their bit, Tom and Freda Lee as verger, Dad did the garden, I helped when able. Loads of memories. My sister got maried there, I myself got married to my late wife Carol in 1986. Sadly now I can only do so much on oxygen, but we have a good priest, Fr Kevin Smith.  Yes, good memories.
