More about this scene

This house was built in the 1850s. Parts of the estate, some 571 acres, were being offered as building plots by 1920, and were sold to developers by 1935. Pre-war Green Belt laws enabled Essex County Council to block planning permission, and they acquired the site in 1937 and demolished the house in 1940.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I was born at "Elmwood" in the village in 1941 and remember the tree on the corner, the 175 bus used to give it a wide berth to get round the corner. I now reside in Queensland and am 74 and retired. John Kilby

We had horses at the farm, but when my grandmother, Maggie Saward, grew old and could not cope with the farm ...see more
I attended several one week Ford Marketing Courses over a three Year period 1969 to 1972. Good times
I was born in Lower Bedfords Road and as a young child I can remember cattle coming down the road to go in one of the fields in Bedfords Park. My mum used to shoo them out of the garden with a tea towel. I played over there all the time as a child. My children also loved seeing the deer over there, as do my grandchildren now. Sadly my father passed away 3 years ago so I can no longer go to my family home in Lower Bedfords Road. But it was a lovely area to grow up in.
