Notes From The Frith Files. A memory of Ospringe, Kent The trade bicycle centre right of the photo belongs to Friars Bakery. The bakery is set back out of view where the bicycle is parked. It is now converted to a bungalow. The single storey building mid-left, was the Rifle Range. All buildings on the left hand side have now been replaced by housing except for the building with the advertising hoardings. Posted: 31/08/2006 10:18 by The Frith Memory Archivist |

Bliss! A memory of Leysdown-On-Sea, Kent My Aunt Maggie lived at 1 Easton Road (Halfway down the High Street towards the beach, turn left at the newsagent into Easton Road). Sadly, it appears the road is no longer there according to maps. Surely the road featured in the photograph is called The Promenade? I was born there in 1945, and mum and I spent our summer holidays at Aunt Maggie's bungalow. I have so many fond memories of Leysdown before it became commercialised. My last visit there was in 1959, and I haven't been back. The photo is just as I remember, especially the motorbike and sidecar. Posted: 14/07/2006 14:11 by Roy Preston |

Living With Nanny A memory of Selling, Kent I remember well living with my nanny in Neames Forstell, she was Rose Beake, a formidable lady, but oh how I loved her. I remember going to Selling school, and if it rained or snowed being brought home in the police car by Sargeant Onions. I remember going to play "up round the ring", going to find uncle Harold and aunty Edie, oh so many memories. I was happiest staying with nanny, going to play in the garden of the Sondes Arms, feeding the chickens, except when the cockerel bit me, well I did poke my finger through the wire. I never wanted to go home, I loved it at nanny's, even when aunty Dot tried to make me try coffee, now I never drink anything else. My saddest moment was in November 1955 when we all piled into the removal van, to go and live in Stoke on Trent. It might have been the moon, I didn't want to go. That was where dad lived and I didn't like him much, and it was so far away from Selling and nanny. I can still picture it, and eating nanny's cooking. I am married now and a nanny myself, but I can't cook food like nanny did, her brawn was superb. Oh I loved Selling, it was heaven, being there with nanny. My name in those days was Pam Smytheman, and my mum was Joan. Looking back at old photos, I was skinny, ginger haired. But oh how I loved my nanny and Selling. Eastchurch Garage A memory of Eastchurch, Kent My family owned the garage seen on the right of this photo and were living here when I was born. It went under the name of DH Beard and Son and my grandfather started the business in the 1930s. He also ran the local taxi company which included the school runs from around the island. There were many changes over the years until the business was sold in 1963. I have many happy childhood memories of holidays on the Isle of Sheppey! Posted: 01/11/2008 14:29 |
