Southport memories

Trips to Southport over the years.

My father's aunt lived in Southport and worked as a radiologist at the Southport Infirmary in those days.  We would visit practically every weekend.  As I grew up and married and had my own children we always loved visiting Southport. My two daughters had such a lot of fun at Pleasureland.  One of my daughters won the Southport Rosebud contest one year which in those days was held in The Floral Pavillion.  I enjoyed Lord Street and we often stopped and listened to the band at the Band Stand on Lord Street.   Many happy memories of Southport!

Wragg's photographic studio?

Southport, Leyland Arcade 1899

Hi - I have a couple of photos of my great-grandmother taken by Wragg, a photographer in Wigan and Leyton Arcade, Southport. I'd like to hear from anyone who can help me date the pictures by comparing the frames.

Extracts From Southport & Merseyside books

Southport, Lord Street 1900

Lord Street was laid out in the 1820s, the buildings along it displaying a wonderful medley of architectural styles, but apart from stone setts and tram lines, its general appearance has, perhaps, changed little with the passing years. Here, a horse-cart loaded with barrels and bales makes a delivery to an ironmonger’s shop, whilst a boy leans against a hand-cart.

Southport, the Pier 1902

Southport has the country’s longest pleasure pier, which runs for 1,211 yards over the marine boating lake and sands to the sea with attractions that included shows and amusement arcades, as well as a miniature railway. Any similarity it might have with the railway viaduct across Morecambe Bay is no accident, for the same engineer, J Brunlees, built them both.

Southport, Lord Street c1960

Laid out as an extravagant boulevard in the 1820s, Lord Street’s many elegant buildings reflect the town’s ambitions as a high-class residence and resort.
