Red House Inn, Cantley

Heresay says my boat was built in the 1880s for the then-owner of the Red House at Cantley, and was called "Lama" or possibly "Llama". Does anyone have any information on owners/landlords, or boating pictures of that period?

Thanks

Sergeant Sissen

I knew Sergeant Sissen well as he used to meet the Hickling policeman in Catfield where I was born. Local police met regularly in what was called, I think, a "point". I was born in 1925 so I remember the two policemen standing by their tall cycles outside the junction of Catfield Street and Limes Road.

Fairyland

As a child in the early 1960's my family used to holiday on and around the Broads. My most vivid memory is of a place I considered the most magical in the world....Fairyland in Ludham !! I know it is long gone now but I would LOVE any pictures or memories others have of this place. Sadly, although I know photos were taken my parents obviously didnt keep them and none have survived. I can recall it being rather overgrown with large wooden models of flowers and toys in glass cases having tea parties etc !! The object being to follow the trail and look for fairies ! I never found one but I loved looking !! ...read more here

Extracts From Acle & Norfolk books

Acle, the Green from the Post Office c1926

Acle is a small market town, now really a village; it was granted its market charter in the 13th century. It became a major cattle-market, receiving a boost when the railway arrived.

Acle, the Green from the Post Office c1926

Every possible mode of transport can be seen at the junction on the A47 main road to Yarmouth from Norwich. Acle is a busy market town, one of the early possessions of the Bigods, who founded a priory here during the reign of Edward I. Acle has one of the biggest livestock markets in the county, especially for pigs - some families keep one or two pigs in their backyards for their own use and resale. This practice, which originated because of the shortage of meat after the First World War, has been retained today.

Acle, the Staithe c1929

Acle is a popular centre for amateur yachtsmen, who come ashore to explore the area and visit the inns used by local rivermen. These robust characters earn their living all year round on dark-sailed wherries, which are dingier than the white-hulled craft we see here, including the large broads holiday cruiser.

Acle, the Windmill c1929

Now long-disused, this is one of many 19th-century pump mills built to lift water from the drained marshes. The mill has now lost its sails, but not its inverted boat-style cap.

Acle, view from Acle Bridge c1929

Acle Bridge now has a thriving boatyard with leisure-boating facilities. The old Bridge Inn building has gone, but the pantiled outbuilding survives as a craft and gift shop.
