Red House Inn, Cantley
Heresay says my boat was built in the 1880s for the then-owner of the Red House at Cantley, and was called "Lama" or possibly "Llama". Does anyone have any information on owners/landlords, or boating pictures of that period?

Fairyland
As a child in the early 1960's my family used to holiday on and around the Broads. My most vivid memory is of a place I considered the most magical in the world....Fairyland in Ludham !! I know it is long gone now but I would LOVE any pictures or memories others have of this place. Sadly, although I know photos were taken my parents obviously didnt keep them and none have survived. I can recall it being rather overgrown with large wooden models of flowers and toys in glass cases having tea parties etc !! The object being to follow the trail and look for fairies ! I never found one but I loved looking !! ...read more here

Acting Sgt Sissen
My great uncle:Stephen Sissen, was policeman to Ludham from 1922 to 1936 Whilst serving in Ludham he received numerous commendations for his work and the Kings Silver Jubilee medal was awarded to him on 10th May 1935

The Water Otter
Just by the road bridge on the Yarmouth side was a pub with a long grass garden which went down to the river, on the bank was a post with a notice on it which read "Don't disturb the water otter" and tied to the post was a rusty chain. Now the road to the bridge was like a grandstand overlooking the garden and people in the garden would encourage a friend to pull the chain and the people on the bridge, who knew about its secret, would cheer the person on to pull the chain VERY slowly so as not to disturb the water otter. The painted advertisement for Bass on a window is the only indication that this farmhouse beside Acle bridge is an inn. The thatched roof has an unusual border above the edge, which reflects the pattern of the ridge. An early tractor stands in the yard.

Out of season, all the wooden-hulled boats moored along the staithe are covered with protective tarpaulins. Two houseboats are moored near the boathouse, and a fisherman tries his luck from a dinghy.

Acle is a small market town, now really a village; it was granted its market charter in the 13th century. It became a major cattle-market, receiving a boost when the railway arrived.

Now long-disused, this is one of many 19th-century pump mills built to lift water from the drained marshes. The mill has now lost its sails, but not its inverted boat-style cap.

The large hire-boat companies have taken over many of the small boat-building firms, and Easticks has now become Hoseasons. These sheds burnt down in about 1996. Holiday makers relaxing on the cabin cruiser in 1929 enjoyed a less crowded river than they would today.
