Middleton Family
Hi - My family history research finds that my mother Isobella Stephenson was born in Houghton in 1917. Her family may have been in the pub buisness, but her father Harry John Middleton worked for the railways. They eventually ended up in Barnsley where I was born. Any information on this family would be of help to me, Regards Allan Broadhead Last edited: 03/09/2006 00:18 by Allan Broadhead |

Great Massingham Crown Brass Band A memory of Great Massingham, Norfolk Hello, My grandfather was George Frederick Fish, bandmaster to Great Massingham Crown Brass Band. I would dearly love to learn more about both him and the band. Does anyone have any information about them? I believe they once played at Sandringham at Christmas after the king heard them playing in Kings Lynn (I think). I am told that the king was also struck by their uniforms which my grandfather, a tailor, had made for all the bandsmen. Last edited: 18/03/2008 15:07 by Judith Larner |

dersingham 1954 c A memory of Dersingham, Norfolk We lived in the village shop Virginia Stores owned by Peatling & Cawdron. My dad won the Vernons Football Pools in 1955 a great sum of £505.6s, my sister and I had new bikes, and mum and dad went for a holiday to Blackpool! with her new fur coat. We moved to Brancaster after that when they bought the pub there. I remember going to Sandringham with the school to sing carols at Christmas and winning prizes at the flower show for handwriting and needlework, walking through the woods picking chestnuts and ducking when the Royal family rode past on horseback, the Queen Mother coming to the school and watching out for her driving an old shooting break around the village and running through the church yard at dusk frightened silly by the bats that swooped around but not daring to be scared in front of our friends. Stories of North Creake A memory of North Creake, Norfolk My grandfather, John Arnett, was the teacher at the North Creake school for many years. Four of his sons came to Canada. When I was a little girl growing up in distant Saskatchewan the uncles would gather and tell marvellous tales of living in North Creake. I have a photo of the grandmother riding her tricycle, of the brothers in front of the school house during World War I. When my grandfather died there was a story in the Norwich newspaper of how he passed on the Earl's frock coat to the newly elected Labour Member of Parliament. (The Earl was in the habit of giving Grandfather items of clothing for the poor as many were in need in the 1930's but there was little call for a frock coat among the farm labourers.) Thank you for showing me North Creake. F. Arnett Sbrocchi, Western Australia Last edited: 03/07/2007 14:27 by Frances Arnett Sbrocchi |

My ancestors A memory of Castle Acre, Norfolk My great grandfather John Robert Leaman was school master at Castle Acre school - his wife (my great grandmother) was Elizabeth Jane Leaman (nee Ellis). I have visited Castleacre recently and found the village such a beautiful, interesting idyllic place to be. If anyone knows or has any history of this time I would love to hear about them. The time my great grandfather was school master the doctor was Dr Love and the vicar Rev Bloom. I also understand the village school may be closing soon - I would love to have the opportunity to look at the school records where my great grandfather made his diary entries. My grandfather Ellis, my great aunt Jane and siblings were born in Castleacre - any news would be gratefully received. Last edited: 13/10/2008 17:03 by Grace Leaman |
