Cox's Boat Yard
This photo shows Cox's boatyard in late autumn not long after the boat shed on the left had been built. The shed had been part of a wartime camp some where in East Anglia and had been re-erected by the Cox brothers, Lewis and Sonny, complete with American pinups.

Uncle John
My Grand parents lived in Hunsett Mill House around 1920-1930, Grandad, whilst I never knew him they had the house as a tied cottage as part of his job on the farm. He had to keep the dykes clear, and that was as least part of the funtion of the Mill. The child in the row boat is my Uncle John who died three of four years ago. He used to stop the cabin cruisers and offer them a cup of tea and Granny had to stop what she was doing and make it for his new friends.

Extracts From The Broads & Norfolk books
This lovely photograph shows a broad on the upper Bure, possibly South Walsham, showing water lilies which were common on many broads early in the 20th century. A private boathouse on the left is constructed of wood and thatch.

The Abbey of St Benet-at-Holm was founded in 1020 AD by King Canute. It survived the dissolution of the monasteries, but Henry VIII transferred its income and its Abbot, William Rugge, to the see of Norwich. The Bishop of Norwich is still Abbot of St Benet’s and holds a service at the abbey each August, arriving in a procession of boats.

In contrast to the flat marshes of the lower Bure, the upper reaches often have thick undergrowth and trees along the banks. This delightful scene near Coltishall shows a private garden bordering the river, with steps to enable the owners to alight from their boat. The boathouse can be seen further along the river.

Eels used to be commonly found in the Broads rivers, but there is now only one hut remaining at Kandel Dyke above Potter Heigham. Notice the nets to the left of the hut.

The Parish Staithe at Barton is a lovely backwater off the broad. It is owned by the Parish Council and provides 24-hour public mooring, but boat storage and other mooring is reserved for parishioners under a permit scheme. There are now more trees than appear in this photograph.
