Beverley memories

Beck Side

My father lived at 7 Beck Side North as a child having moved there from Hull. The gardens were long and contained fruit trees. His father was a keen gardener. The neighbours kept cows and sold milk! My father fell in the beck aged 3 but managed to get out.

The Lock

I was looking through the photes of Beverley, the man in the picture of the Lock, in the flat cap and shirt sleeves must be Mr Block. He used to come round to my house when I was a boy selling mushrooms that he collected on Figham.

Extracts From Beverley & North Humberside books

Beverley, East End from Chantry Lane 1886

There is no disputing the claim that the Minster is one of Europe’s most beautiful and finest churches. The Early English east end was begun in 1220, and the magnificent Perpendicular west front, with its richly pinnacled towers, was completed in 1420. Inside, amid the immense display of ornament and sculpture, is a rare stone sanctuary chair known as the Frith Stool.

Beverley, Market Place 1886

In the Saturday Market is a market cross built in 1714. It is an open octagon with pillars supporting the domed roof, which displays the arms of England, France and the two local Members of Parliament who donated it.

Beverley, Market Place 1913

Here we have a closer view of the Market Cross, showing the vast amount of setts needed to cover the road. Streets such as this are often wrongly described as cobbled streets. In fact, cobbles are circular and very rare, whereas there are stone sett streets in most northern towns.

Beverley, North Bar Within 1913

This photograph shows the layout of Beverley well, with North Bar leading to the Market Place. It also reveals more detail of the west front of St Mary’s Church.

Beverley, North Bar 1934

The Hayride, which takes place in Walkington on the third Sunday in June, began after the Second World War. A colourful procession of splendid Shire horses pull ancient corn wagons around the area, a tradition known nowhere else in Britain.
