High Bentham memories

High Bentham..looking for info on relatives

Julie CoatesRoyal Palm Beach, Florida, USA

I am trying to find some information about my great gradfather. He was the postman in High Bentham for many years. His last name was Coates. I don't know his first name.He had a son (William Dabbot Coates) and three daughters Annie, Ethel and Gertie.

Bentham Grammer School

I attended Bentham Grammer School which was then located at High Bentham. I believe it has now relocated to Lower Bentham. My memories are many - attending the local church each Sunday Morning, and taking woodworking class at the local carpenters, who also was the coffin maker. Spending my pocket money at the local shops. We also had to do cross country runs around Bentham and on occasions we visited Ingleton Waterfalls.

Extracts From High Bentham & North Yorkshire books

High Bentham, Mount Pleasant from the Cross c1955

There are two Benthams, High and Lower, and this view looks down Mount Pleasant from the village cross in High Bentham. It is interesting to note the old-fashioned flaming beacon school sign on the left, and the cobbled frontage to the cottages and the Black Bull Inn on the right.

Ilkley, Cow and Calf Rocks 1921

It is well worth the effort to climb up these rocks: you’re on top of the world, if a little weary and overheated. Luckily, just below refreshments are to hand at the Cow and Calf Inn, formerly known as the Highfield.

Ilkley, view of Swastika Stone 1914

In this photograph you can see the top of the Semon Convalescent Home just beyond the reservoir. A fair walk westwards then brings you to the Swastika Stone, which is unique in this country. Other examples have been found in Tossene in Sweden and Mycenae in Greece and all depict fertility and religious symbols. The council placed the iron railing around the site in 1913.

Ilkley, the Moors 1914

Up above the Cow and Calf rocks is more evidence of quarrying, but in this photograph the heather softens the scene for the Edwardian picnickers taking in the valley view, top right.

Ilkley, Denton Park from the Cow and Calf Rocks 1914

This young man looks out from between these famous rocks towards the magnificent estate of Denton Park.
