my village
We had a youth club run by Sister Louis Mary at the convent in Newmains. I loved going to it as there was always something exciting going on. Sister enjoyed putting on concerts and I loved taking part in them. She put on an operetta once, I think it was called" The Golden Amulet" and I played the lead part of Princess JuJu. I used to love the summer holidays, those long sunny days when we could go exploring. Sometimes a crowd of us would go down clydeside for a walk, mainly to Garrion bridge and back. What a walk that was, it took us all day, but we never felt afraid and our parents never stopped us from going. We all looked after each other. I remember one walk in particular. There was me, my sister Lillian and friends Betty McClair and I think Margaret Armit and a few others but I can't remember who. We stopped outside one of the cottages near the Garrion bridge and an old lady came out and gave us all a drink of water and a piece n' jam. Lovely memories of a village that was not picturesque at all but it was my home and I still miss it after being away for forty years. kathleen Kelly{Slavin} Posted: 28/08/2008 20:59 by Kathleen Kelly |
