Ministry of Pensions A memory of Cefn Mawr, Clwyd My father, Eric Bowen of Ruabon, worked at the Ministry of Pensions office, shown on the left of the postcard, for many years. I used to visit him occasionally. Posted: 09/09/2008 11:35 |

Roman Bridge and Aqueduct, Cefn Mawr A memory of Cefn Mawr, Clwyd I have an old, undated photograph labeled "Roman Bridge and Aqueduct, Cefn Mawr WH316". In the background the bridge looks like the one in the Francis Frith picture. In the forefront is a lower stone bridge with water flowing under it. Are both structures standing to-day? Birth of mother A memory of Cefn Mawr, Clwyd My mother, Phyllis Hughes, was born at 10 Well Street in September 1906. I wonder what is there now? She was brought to Ontario, Canada as an infant by her parents, Charlotte (Jones) and Edward William Hughes. They were hired as farmers and remained in Canada for the remainder of their lives. Happy days in Pentre. A memory of Penycae, Clwyd The top bungalow in your photo (one), brings some happy memories. This was the first school in Pen-y-Cae. I spent many, many hours there with Hughie and his brother. The two classrooms (bedrooms to-day) go up in steps. There used to be many old photos on the walls of children taken in the two classrooms. bryn eitha A memory of Penycae, Clwyd I was born in Bryn Eitha Penycae in February 1941 I to spent many happy hours playing in the area of Pentre near the old mill. I allso knew of Crad The Garth as mentioned in another correspondance. All the local villages had characters such as Crad, our character was Bob Hoy, he was a harmless man who always preached the gospel to all of us young children, he used to get us together an sing 'I'M A H A P P Y' these were difficult times for our parents but very HAPPY times for us children. Most of our spare summer time was spent either down at the recreation ground ( the rec.) near the Mill Farm, on Ruabon mountain picking whimberries, down in Jacks Wood ( yr ddol) or pestering the local farmers. Saturday afternoons were devoted to the PAVILION cinema in Broad Street Rhos, where we would shout and stamp our feet to urge on Roy Rogers and Trigger. If it rained very heavy the sound track was drowned out by the noise of the rain on the tin sheet roof. Then race home for tea over Bonc Ddu and Pant brick works, more playing of cowboys and indians that we had just seen at the cinema. A mention to ELEN EVANS and her memories of the MILL. ( FR FELYN) I was freindly with Rob Ellis, a brother of Audrey and Edna Ellis who Elen remembers in write up. I eventually married Audrey in 1969 and we are now enjoying retirement and have two boys. Edna married Lawrence Evans and they now enjoy retirement, they have two children and two grand children. All of Audreys brothers and sisters are still arround and are all enjoying retirement I could go on for ever about Penycae but I will leave that for another day.
