Ministry of Pensions

Cefn Mawr, Post Office c1955

My father, Eric Bowen of Ruabon, worked at the Ministry of Pensions office, shown on the left of the postcard, for many years. I used to visit him occasionally.

Roman Bridge and Aqueduct, Cefn Mawr

Cefn Mawr, Pontysyllte Aqueduct c1955

I have an old, undated photograph labeled "Roman Bridge and Aqueduct, Cefn Mawr WH316". In the background the bridge looks like the one in the Francis Frith picture. In the forefront is a lower stone bridge with water flowing under it. Are both structures standing to-day?

Birth of mother

Cefn Mawr, Well Street c1955

My mother, Phyllis Hughes, was born at 10 Well Street in September 1906.
I wonder what is there now? She was brought to Ontario, Canada as an infant by her parents, Charlotte (Jones) and Edward William Hughes. They were hired as farmers and remained in Canada for the remainder of their lives.

Growing up

As a kid growing up on "The Garth" I have memories of playing cowboys and indians in the woods around King William's Tower, (home made bows and arrows) and still living to tell the tale ;0) Being chased out of "Dai's Wood" on a regular basis. Crad the Garth (now there was a character!) I do remember sneaking over the back wall of The Rockmans's Arms, stealing empty bottles, and going around the front to trade the bottles for a bottle of lemonade or Vimto! I'm sure the landlord knew what was going on LOL. Helping the Blake boys at harvest time. Don't really know if we were a help or a hinderance.
