Prestatyn memories

Happy holidays

Staying with granny, Norton Avenue, running free all day with my brothers, the school my brother went to, now an Indian restaurant. Skelton and Dowell Butchers, St John's Methodist church, twice on a Sunday.  The building of the promenade, hating it, the loss of the sand dunes.  The high street with a farm in it, now Boots etc.  Just the freedom to run all the day, my brothers played with the headmaster's sons, so couldn't get up to real mischief.  The Denbighshire and Flint Show each year. Such a happy childhood, holidays every summer for many years.

Childhood memories

We moved to Prestatyn in 1960 when I was 3. My first memory was riding on my dad's shoulders walking up the High Street and seeing a bus with no roof! We lived in Linden Walk for three years and I used to enjoy milkshakes in a cafe on the High Street. Several years later my Gran bought the same house, so my holidays as a ten year old were spent in the same house! I remember walking up the mountain with my Mum to a gate at the top, which is still there. It's near the layby with the viewpoint. We used to walk over to Gwyensgor for ice creams and feed the ducks in the pond on the way.

Ffrith beach

My first memories of the Ffrith beach are of my grandfather who started the fun fair, which had an arcade, bingo and fair ground. There was also two boating ponds, cafe, ice cream kiosks etc. Many good days were spent on the beach, it's a shame that the Ffrith is no longer a family-oriented place to be. Back in my grandfathers day the Ffrith was packed with holiday makers and day tripers, what happened?
Later on in the 70s there was a gokart track added, I can't remember who had the gokarts.
That's all for now - hope it's triggered some memories of the Ffrith as it was.

Prestatyn, the Holiday Camp c1955

You could get a week’s holiday ‘all in’ for £8 15s around the time of this photograph, and full entertainment was included right next to the beach by the owner, Billy Butlin. Mass tourism was in full swing in the 1950s and 60s, but by the 1980s tastes had begun to change, and the camp closed.
