Happiest Days of My Life in Valley 1 A memory of Valley, Gwynedd I am now 52 years of age and hanker after village life after 30 odd years in a city!!. Why? Because in 1960 my parents moved to Valley from Manchester and I started in Valley C.P. Schools soon afterwards. I grew up in the village joining St Michael's choir in the 60s and early 70s and moved away seeking 'excitement'. I joined the Police in Manchester! Sometimes I wish I had stayed in Valley. I do know what's going on in relation to youth nuisance and crime etc in the village but it is nothing compared to what others put up with! I am happily married with two grown up children and we all love coming home to Valley. We all enjoy the combination of visitors and local people mixing. Just stand outside Spar and watch everyone. That atmosphere does NOT exist in a city. So value it, keep it and develop it. David Jones, formerly Tan-y-Bryn Last edited: 28/07/2008 09:15 by David Jones |

Life in the village A memory of Llanfachraeth, Gwynedd Was wonderful to see this postcard, as I was a child of 7 living in the village, when the photo.was taken. When we moved to the village in 1954 there was no electricity, water was from the village pump and people used chemical or earth closets. In 1960, there was mains water and electricity but no proper sanitation. I have wonderful memories of living in the village, playing in the fields and having easy access to the beach. I have visited the village quite a few times in the past 10 years and have met up with old child hood friends. Posted: 19/12/2007 13:04 by Bob Hughes |

Maelog Lake Hotel A memory of Rhosneigr, Gwynedd A schoolfriend of my former wife (now sadly deceased) married a Rhosneigr man and lived in the village. In order to visit them my wife, I and our year old daughter visited Rhosneigr first in 1971, again in 1973 and for the last time in 1977 when our son was three years old. We stayed each time at the Maelog Lake Hotel which was then run by Dennis and Elsie Clutton. We had marvellous holidays in Rhosneigr and spent many hours on the wonderful beaches with our children. We also spent many hours in the bar of the hotel with Dennis and some of the locals sampling some of Dennis's cocktails and, more potently, his 100% dark rum! I can vividly recall the hotel, the lake itself and the short walk over the sand dunes to get to the beach, which, when the tide was out, was almost as wide as it was long. Some time after our last stay we did hear from Elsie that Dennis had sadly died, she herself was leaving the hotel and so we never did go back. After my wife and I divorced in 1986 I lost touch with our friends. The girl's name was Jane, I believe her husband's name was John Bailey and I believe their son was Gareth. My memories of Rhosneigr and Maelog Lake Hotel, the lake with its little wooden jetty, are very happy ones. In 1978 I took employment as an HGV driver and although I travelled to the mainland North Wales I never got to travel on to Anglesey. I would not want to return to Rhosneigr now as I have no doubt it has changed beyond recognition and for that reason alone any return would be tinged with sadness. I would like to hear from anyone who either lived or holidayed there at that time. Last edited: 30/06/2008 10:13 by Colin Carey |

Guest houses in Beach Road A memory of Rhosneigr, Gwynedd I spent most of my earliest summer holidays in the Fifties and Sixties at Rhosneigr and have idyllic memories of whole days spent with family or with friends of my age in the sand-dunes; campfires, charred sausages, shrimping in the rockpools and ice cream from the Marigold, pocket money to be spent at the Bon Marche or Madge Britton's shop opposite the clock. It was a case of history repeating itself, for my father, Clifford Hughes, had spent his summers there too in the 1920s at the guest house, Erylmor, in Beach Road run by his Aunt Mary, who retired to Beach Terrace. We stayed further down at The Anchorage, then run by the Bowdens - he, Geoff? was in the RAF at Valley and the family later opened and ran The Dolphin just up the road. My great [or maybe great-great] grandfather was the boatman and lifeboatman Huw 'Baglan' Hughes. Other relatives in Rhosneigr were my Great aunts Meg and Flo Hughes who lived in Harrison Drive before retiring to Rhyl. I have been back many times since with and without my own children and am currently walking the Anglesey Coast Path with my wife and a group of friends. I now live in Powys in Mid-Wales, but I certainly cherish my memories of Rhosneigr and my Anglesey heritage. Posted: 22/02/2008 21:44 by Adrian Hughes |

our parents owned Quality Stores next to the old Cinema A memory of Rhosneigr, Gwynedd I am Delphine Chapple's sister and I lived in Rhosneigr for all my years at Holyhead Grammar School. The walk or bike ride to the station was indeed more than any young person would contemplate these days. With reference to Nicholas Farmer's comment above, if I remember correctly, the name of the local Doctor who lived next door to Pennyburn (Pen-y-Bryn?) was Dr Lloyd. My husband and I were married at the parish church in Llanfaelog in 1967 by our grandfather -- Rev. H.L.Hughes who was retired and lived in a small cottage in Llanfaelog. Our aunt, Betty Lloyd-Williams, owned The Marigold Cafe at the bottom of Beach Road, her son was Kevin Lloyd-Williams, who unfortunately passed away very suddenly a few years ago. His wife and their two daughters still live in the village. It seemed that the wind was always blowing in Rhosneigr, and the sea was rough more often than not, no wonder it is now somewhat of a surfer's paradise. The village was always busy with "visitors" in the summer but very quiet during the winter. I have visited the village a few times in the intervening years, but it no longer 'feels' like Rhosneigr. I moved away to college in Liverpool in 1963 and have since emigrated to Calgary, Canada. However, we have a son whose name is Endaf Aelwyn -- Good Welsh name that, especially with Jones at the end of it, and yes, he was born in Wales. Last edited: 01/02/2008 18:12 by Velvor Jones |
