A special place - Marie Woods
A memory of Gwytherin, Clwyd

I visited the Gwytherin church and the Lion Inn in August 2007 and was upset to learn that the church is now deconsecrated. It seemed to us to be a very special place with the megaliths, the connection to St Winifride, the wonderful ancient yews. What is the future for this sacred spot - will it be sold to a developer? It seems to deserve a protected status. I am sure that many people would love to visit this village and spend time in the peaceful grounds. I don't have any connection to Wales, coming from New Zealand and am unlikely to ever return but I will always remember Gwytherin - and the coffee that the delightful proprietor of the inn shouted us!

  Cyril Evans
A memory of Melin-Y-Wig, Clwyd

Does anyone remember my father Cyril Evans, and his family. I think he left the village around the 1940s at the age of 14???

  Childhood Memories
A memory of Clawddnewydd, Clwyd

I used to stay with my nain in Clawddnewidd and have very fond memories. Mrs Watson lived next door and used to pop in every night with some fruit for us. At that time there was a top shop run by Mr Lake and his wife, they were always so nice to us. We used to go to the chapel for service and my nain and a few other villagers used to pluck pheasants. My Uncle Emrys lived in Nant Farm and used to call at nain's every morning with fresh milk from the farm. We went on many walks picking rasberries for nain to make a pie but my favourite was always her ginger cake. I was told never to go to the pond at the bottom of the village as it had a whirlpool in it but of course I had to find out. Once a year there was a show and my nain always dressed up in her Welsh lady outfit. I still visit Clawdd now to go to my nain's grave, it has changed. There are more houses and top shop and bottom shop have now closed but there is a farm shop across from the cemetery where many of my relatives are buried. I love this little village and will always have my happier memories of my childhood in my heart forever.

  my childhood
A memory of Llanfairtalhaiarn, Clwyd

Well what can I say! My father was born in the village and of course my grandparents lived and died there. They lived at number 1 Maes ye Llan (probably spelt wrong) and with my dad living in Manchester bringing up 3 children with my mum we were always in the village at my grandparents. The memories that I have are all brilliant playing in the playfields which is now a housing estate with all the locals that we knew and fishing in the river as well as swimming there in the summer, going to the village bakery to buy some of the tasty shortbread we used to pig out on.I would love to just be able to go back in time for 1 day and night and to be at their house with the coal fire going and to sit as a family like we used to, it would be the best thing ever.I still sometimes go back to the village to the cemetery and drive round to see if I recognise anyone but its changed so much. The last time I was there I took my 3 year old son,  its like a tradition ha ha but he is too young to realise anything about Llanfair yet. It certainly is a place that I will always keep in my heart for as long as I'm alive.....

Cynwyd, the Old Bridge 1936 (ref: C372013)
Year: 1967 Cynwyd Youth Hostel
A memory of Cynwyd, Clwyd

The Youth Hostel in Cynwyd was a converted watermill. It was very old and very damp and I stayed there one wet weekend in April 1967 with my girlfriend Angela Chapuis as we were heading towards Snowdon. I had a top bunk and banged my head on the low roof beams! What a wet weekend! The memory lingers as the following day we moved on from Cynwyd and stayed at Llanberis before our attempt on Snowdon. The weather was so bad that the mountain rescue teams were out forcing everybody back from the mountain so here I am forty years later and I STILL haven't been up Snowdon! Cynwyd was pleasant and our North Wales adventure is still a happy memory.
