The left- hand or south pedestrian arch was inserted in 1865, and the building on the left was part of the police station, built in 1865 and demolished in 1964 for the present (very 1960s) Abbey Hall
The massive bulk of the ancient abbey walls rise close the vista in the distance.
In 1539, Henry VIII dissolved the abbey; all that remains today are the church of St Mary and St Sexburga, and the abbey gatehouse.
The Malthouse is medieval; in its Abingdon Abbey days it was the dyehouse, becoming a malthouse after about 1700.
