Towards the north-west lies the mound of Beacon Hill.
They came up with 'bungalets', a concept that the planners preferred as an alternative to chalets, a building type from the 1930s whose image was unfashionable.
It was not just the service industries and manufacturing industries that had to transform themselves, but the local agricultural scene also needed to change.
From there they fall away in a picturesque series of steps, rising again to the same level as Leith Hill at Hindhead and Black Down.
The small tower at the far end of the church served as a mark for sailors heading for the port: it used to carry a beacon at night.
The single-storey white building was the Coastguard Station, built between 1884 and 1904.
It was taken from the railway station, which was built in 1863 when the Cambrian Railway arrived on its way from Machynlleth to Aberystwyth.
A National Savings Centre is tucked away on the left of our picture, and the Millstone Hotel is at the far side.
This view shows Eype Mouth, looking westwards to what is now a National Trust skyline, with Ridge Cliff and Doghouse Hill rising into the 508-feet summit of Thorncombe Beacon (centre).
