Childhood
I lived in Kitchener Street as a child which is just around the corner of Flaxley Road to the left of the picture. There was a bakery next door for a while. I have great memories of the shops along Flaxley Road, such as the butchers which two old women seemed to run, the big grocery shop with its great smells, the women's fashion shop run by Mrs Whitely and the sweet shop. Mum used to clean for many of the shopkeepers and I remember being very impressed by Mrs Whitley's flocked swan wallpaper. Dad used to have allotments in Flaxley Road and had pigs so he used to get left-overs from the bakery. The sweet shop was fantastic with yummies such as lucky bags, pineapple lumps, acid drops, traffic light lollies, palma violets and that strange stuff like wood which you chewed on.

RE: RE: Childhood
The sweet shop between Buller Street and White Street was run by Mrs Peckover. There was also a corner shop on the far corner of White Street run by Mr & Mrs Cumiskey. There was a bakery between Buller & White Street called Wrights, the baker was Charlie Wright. I think there was another bakery near Kitchener Street called Heppenstalls. I think the grocers on the corner of Buller Street was called The Mutual. The fish & chip shop was called Reynolds. There was a gents barbers near the chippy & a hairdressers nearby. I think the butcher was Furness's. Opposite the shops in the foreground was a haulage firm, Mooney & Morleys, where an auction was held regularly. Set back on the right between Buller street and White Street was a steam laundry. A Co-Op store was on the corner of Kitchener Street where my mum would sent me sometimes. I think her "divvy" number was 47911! Ah, memories of childhood.
