Groves Lock
In my youth (1950s) the lock on the right was know as Groves lock. Mr Groves hired out boats in the summer months and his house was to the right rear of this picture. The river divides here, with the river going of to the left. You used to be able to row a boat down there until you came to a weir. The land in the centre of the picture was owned by Mrs May and her son. Their big house was behind the trees. It still remains.

RE: RE: Groves Lock
My grandfather was Walter Grove - he was the man who hired out boats and my grandmother, Alice Grove served teas on a little island in the river near the lock - this was in the 20 s. My father was Walter and Alice's 13th child, Vernon. Their sons Norman and Ewart (my Uncles) also worked on the river. My great grandfather, William Grove, Walter's father also worked on the locks, right up until the day he died in 1915, aged 90. And note, it is Grove, not Groves!! There is no S on the end! That little house on the right hand side is the Send Boathouse, and how they raised all those children there I will never know! Mind you - the first child, a daughter, was born in 1884 - my father, the youngest was born in 1906. Lots of Walter's descendants still ive in the area. I now live in Brisbane, Queensland in Australia, but I have lots of memories of Send, especially the Church of St Mary's. I would love to hear from anyone who has pictures of the boathouse and of its inhabitants - I have done extensive research on the family and I find it fascinating! My father mentioned lots of names when he talked about Send, he had friends in childhood who wonderful names, Cecil Pink, Edgar Baker ( I always thought it was Egg and Bacon when I was little), "Happy" Sadler, Ron Fox, Ron Sex, the Giles family, Fanny Monks (Dad's first wife) Would be lovely to get in touch with anyone else who's grandfather or father has memories of the Grove family (good or bad!) Kind regards Yvette O'Brien (nee Grove)

It's so interesting reading these memories because we boat at this spot now. I am a leader of Sea Rangers who took over the boathouse at Send some time ago. We teach girls aged 9-21 yrs how to canoe, row, sail and even have our own narrowboat which is moored very near to the New Inn Pub at Send.
Thought that you may be interested to know that regular boating is still taking place at this beatuiful spot. We love it.
