L Remember it Being Dam Cold
l came across the vindi site by accident, and was amazed to see the old ship again, l trained on her on the stewards side over the1965 xmas period and went on to travel the world on the m.v. huntsland, carrying cargo all around the world.
seeing the photo brougt back so many memories of many years ago, does anyone else remember the jam butties at the seamans mission or swopping our cap badges with the crews on the russian boats in the docks.

RE: RE: L Remember it Being Dam Cold
I was at "Vindi" in January 1956. I remember being picked up at the station, and marching to the training ship for a first meal of "Sea Pie", an awful concoction of fishbones and mash. I was in hut B1. It was bitterly cold and my worst recollection is peeling spuds behind the galley with freezing cold water, and a particularly nasty fat cook who shouted at us constantly. We were always hungry. In our off time we would walk down to the seaman's mission, where a padre named Mark Allen always gave us a welcome. I believe he gave all the Vindi boys a small new testament which he signed. I still have mine to this day. It was tough but it did me a world of good. Who could forget Codeine Annie, the matron, and Mary from the Dairy! Happy Days!
I went on to travel the world and later joined Trinity House whom I sailed with for 14 years.
