Chickenley Hall
Hello. My father lived at Chickenley Hall in the 1940s as he was adopted and brought to the home by the Armitage family. He eventually came to Scarborough, North Yorkshire and has started to write his memoirs which are still in production. What's been written so far has been put onto Facebook by myself. Anyone who would like to help with any info, please feel free to contact me.
Mum
Hello, my mum was born in 1957, her mum Margaret Hanson married into the Armitage family, my mum was adopted roughly in the 1960s along with her full brother, her mum Margaret emigrated to Australia and later had another son by the name of Robert Armitage who we know has been trying to find my mum. Her full brother (unsure of his name) is apparently living in London, he was never adopted acording to records, there was a post in 2007 from a guy called JJ on the Ancestry site looking for a lady with my mum's exact date of birth, who wanted to find her, any information would be gratefully received, thanks.
Being Nostalgic
My memories of Chickenley was learning how mutch we depended on each other, neighbours were important, we all used to go to the tip (football/recreation ground) to play our games. I now live in Mirfield, I am retired, and looking back I know we had it hard compared today but I think we were better people. We used to live at Princess Road opposite the school.
My Chickenley Childhood
I was born in 1982 and spent my life until 1995/96 growing up in Cchickenley. My memory is the long hot summers, playing in the fields that looked out over Thornhill with all friends and family and jumping into the hay stacked for us by the farmer. We all knew each other and looked out for one another.....only going home when we were hungry, the rest of the time was adventures!! We used to wait for 'Joe and his green van' selling sweets and bread. My nan and grandad worked at the cricket club in Chickenley and we used to go there for Bonfire Nights, Halloween and Christmas parties, fairs in the summer and good old jumble sales!! Chickenley has changed now but I wouldn't change my childhood down there in the 1980s for the world. My family was the Chadwicks and Chambers and we were all so close and the community was child friendly, playing out an hour after opening our Christmas prezzies and showing off our new toys.... Chickenley Hall
My mother, now in her 90s, was a Stephenson, from the family who owned Chickenley Hall. We have no photos of the building, and as it was let during her childhood, she never visited it. (She grew up in Scarborough instead).
Does anybody have any memories of the Hall building itself, inside or out ? She would love to know more about it.
A NEW BEGINNING
My first school was Purlwell. Then I attended Warwick Road School in Batley Carr. I remember the flats being built up the side of Hyrstlands Road. We used to have so much fun going up and down ladders and scaffolding. Needless to say, before H & S. Also, when they were knocking down the old houses, or slums (not that I would call them that, people lived in them and they were their homes), one day when all of us from Hyrstlands decided that we wanted to make a bunker (people from round here will know what I am on about) we all went down to the old houses. What a great time.Being able to smash up things and not get a good hiding for it. Plus we got enough wood and four wheels from a pram to make a great bunker. Highfield House/Cottage /Earlsheaton
The best of my childhood memories are of Highfield House and Highfield Cottage in the late part of the 60s and early 70s. The summers always seemed hot and the days were long and happy. I come from a large family and we always had so much fun in the fields at the back of the house, rolling from the top of the hill almost down to the train tracks at the bottom, sunbathing or anything that would fill our day, we used to stay out for hours, only going home when it got dark or we were hungry. I remember when the fairground came, we could see it from the railings in our garden looking out over Dewsbury, you could hear the music playing and the bright lights flashing, or the voices and the screams of the people on the rides.
