For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). I have a photo of my great-grandfather walking down Broadway. I'm unable to make out anything elso on my photo. He vacationed in Sheerness in Blue Town during the 1930's. I'd like to know the name of the steeple that is across from the Royal hotel. I've seen it in a few photos but I don't see it on modern maps. Donna Webb
I remember going to Sheerness in the early 1960's. My grandparents lived in Chatham, my grandad working in the stores at Chatham dockyard. I used to stay with them for a week and they bought a weekly train ticket to travel the line between Chatham and Dover. We used to visit Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Sheerness. My grandparents lived at 40 Invicta Road Sheerness during WW2 and my dad would have been about 8 ...see more
This was my grandparent’s toy shop. I can remember hanging out of the window (the one with the curtain flapping) and watching the Sheerness Carnival floats pass by. It seems like another world now!
Hello, Can anybody remember 'Rix & Co', Ironmongers and Upholsterers, of New Brompton and Sheerness?? I have a small round foot stool, dating from the early 1900's. While cleaning and treating it for bugs etc, I found the makers sticker on the underside. As above. It came from one of my Grandparents homes. They were born and raised in Chatham and Gillingham C1890's. Both their Fathers worked at Chatham Dockyards, ...see more
I lived in Gillingham and before the war we usually went to Sheerness for a weeks holiday always staying at the same Guest House. The Guest House was about a mile from the sea front and we had to be out in the morning by 9.30 a.m.and were not allowed to return before 5 p.m with "High Tea" served half an hour later. These stringent house rules proved somewhat tiresome when the weather was wet and I can remember a ...see more
I was/am the lad on the right! I discovered this picture a few years back in a superb Frith's book on Kent. Alongside me is my mate Ray. I think the year is more like 1957 or it could the summer of 1956. It was during those lovely days when kids spent whole days out of the house and generally unsupervised. Ray and I and other gang members spent loads of time up on the seafront and beach at a time when Sheerness was a ...see more
In 1953, I moved here at the age of 2 with my parents from London's Old Kent Road. We rented the large flat directly above Kiddie's Store (seen on the left of this picture of the High Street). My father worked at a local bakery. I remember the police coming one day after there'd been a big burglary into Kiddie's Store, the thieves having got through from the skylight at the back of our flat. Another day I remember the ...see more
