Grand Hotel 1901
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

I have just obtained a print of Sheringham promenade with a building on the left on top of a hill. I searched through these photos and came across the Grand Hotel - and that is the building in my picture. The date is 1890s. Does anyone know if this building still stands and if so is it still a hotel, or something else?
Thank you.

RE: RE: Grand Hotel

Dear Valerie,
The Grand Hotel was built to accommodate the ever swelling visitor numbers provoked by the arrival of the railway. There were three Victorian purpose-built hotels, Sheringham Hotel, The Grand and The Burlington Hotel.  Sheringham Hotel was the first and largest, built on land opposite the police station. This land was accuired by speculators to take advantage of the railway's arrival at Sheringham. Sheringham Hotel cost 10,000 pounds to build. The grounds were larger than the Grand or the Burlington, large enough to provide three tennis courts, a bowls green and tennis quoits. There were also extensive garage facilities for guests cars. Nine years later in 1898 the Grand Hotel was built with 105 rooms, an imposing structure in a dominant position on rising ground adjacent to the golf course with excellent sea views. The Grand and the Burlington, constructed a year later in 1899, both had bowling greens and the essential ball rooms. The ballrooms were to provide the venue for dance bands in all their forms. In 1974 the Grand was demolished. Private housing now stands on the site. The Burlington is the only one of the purpose-built Victorian hotels still trading today.

RE: RE: Grand Hotel

Thank you so much for all your info...what a shame that as time marches on the old buildings fall. There is a hotel in Sidmouth, Devon, that is also very grand (The Victoria) which also overlooks the sea...very much like the Grand.
Again thank you
Valerie

RE: RE: Grand Hotel

In the early 1960s I worked at the Bulington Hotel as a chef and we used to sneak into the Grand to play snooker, sadly the Grand is now a block of appartments.
