1950s - 1960s Memories

I was born in Tidworth, moved to Arena Road camp (does anyone remember it?). I have very happy memories of living in our nissen hut. We moved to Parkhouse Close (as it was known then) when the houses there were first built. I also only remember happy times growing up here. Then Shipton was a small community where everyone knew everyone, It was a lovely place and I only wish my children could have grown up there. My name then - Ann Simpson

The Choir

Garrison Church of St Michael c1955

My Dad was posted to Tidworth in 1953 and I joined the choir in this church. Practice was twice a week, and you didnt miss it!! Two services on Sunday, morning and evening and we didnt miss them either, unless sickness intervened. Our choir master was Mr K. Burnett who was also the organist, very talented. The padre when I joined had two daughters, but I cant remember the name. There were some wonderful Armistice Day services in this church, very moving. After all, 1953 was only 8yrs after the end of WW2. My brother was also in the choir, and we were members until February of 1956 when we went to Jordan which was my Dads next posting with the 10th Royal Hussars (PWO). One other memory, in winter the church was very cold!!

My grandmother, Annie Maria Pearce lived in one of those thatched cottages. The third door from the left of the white building. It was number 444. My parents Arthur and Barbara Wheeler-Smith emigrated to Australia with us three kids in 1965. My brothers names are Peter and Michael.

I remember living in one of the houses of Jellalabad in 1963, before my dad was posted out to Singapore and we joined him later. I would have been about three years old but can still remember riding my three wheeler bike up and down the street and my pedal motor car. I had a friend called Tony who also lived in the same block.

St Mary''s Church South Tidworth

I lived in Tidworth Garrison as a child, (my name was Margaret Vincent then) and attended the Garrison Junior School and later Andover Grammar School.  I grew up there enjoying the wonderful freedom that Salisbury Plain offered to active children. Later, through my father, I met Alan English, one of the last national servicemen and we were married at St Mary's Church South Tidworth on 12th October 1963.  This is the beautiful 'Victorian Gothic' church near Tidworth House, built by John Johnson the designer of Alexandra Palace.  We recently visited the church, on 7th December 2008, and although it is no longer used for services we were able to gain access as it is still used for meetings.  We really enjoyed our short visit and our long trip down memory lane.

Gran And Grandad Harman

My gran and grandad, Elsie and Jim Harman, lived at 4 The High Street.  My earliest memories are of, strangely, the moss-covered footpath that encircled the cottage on three sides, it was how pathways in old cottages should be!  I also have fond memories of hot summer lunchtimes playing outside The Plough while the adult members of the family partook of a beverage or ....?  My father attended the school for a few years and my grandfather worked for Shearings until his retirement.

My Early Years

my memories relate from the very early forties till the early eighties. I was born in Andover in 1937.My mother was a Lambourne and was born in Thruxton in 1903 at Rose cottage which is just to the left of the "George" looking southwards. My mother was one eight children born at Rose Cottage between 1894 and 1904 .The children being:Margaret Nina;Reginal Bertram;Olive Marion;Kathleen Violet;Montague Hugo;John Henry;MARGARET SYBIL;William Cyril. My mother being Margaret Sybil. My grandfather was Glennie Lambourne who was a Baker. The Bakery was to the left of the GEORGE and to the right of the post office which was almost opposite Rose Cottage. Glennie had a contract to supply the army at Tidworth. Ludgershal and Bulford. There was a large barn at the back of Roe Cottage and an outside toilet attached to the barn next to the stream. There was a pond next to the barn and the side of the house. The Lambournes also owned about two acres of the land towards the vicarage... Read more
