- The Tome Stone in Barnstaple's colonnaded Queen Anne's Walk is where merchants set down their money to make their contracts binding.
- Lundy Island off the north Devon coast is famous for its puffins. The name "Lundy" actually derives from an old Norse word for puffin. In earlier centuries the island was frequently used as a pirate stronghold, particularly by the Marisco family, who preyed on the ships using the busy port of Bristol.
- One former resident of Bideford, Mary Sexton, is immortalised by a much-quoted epitaph in the churchyard: "Here lies the body of Mary Sexton, Who pleased many a man, But never vex'd one; Not like the woman under the next stone".
- Jane Austen's happy memories of holiday in Devon caused her to set her book "Sense and Sensibility" in the Exeter area.
- The River Dart was held in some respect because of the way in which it could suddenly turn into a roaring torrent after heavy rainfall on Dartmoor, as testified by this old rhyme:
"Dart! Dart! Cruel dart!
Every year thou claim'st a heart!
