Brickmakers Factory - New Road?
I don't suppose anybody knows anything of the Brickmakers Factory and the brickmakers' cottages in New Rd c1930, the cottages were built around 1929 I believe? I was told this about 10 years ago and I have not yet met anyone that can confirm this info. I was told that there was a factory at the end of the road and the brickmakers lived in the cottages...

RE: RE: Brickmakers Factory - New Road?
My dad, Peter Pocock, could tell you all about the brickyard. When I asked him he was off down memory lane. He remembers where the clay came from and how the bricks were made and fired. Apparently the Smallfield bricks, when fired, came out in an assortment of colours and the black bricks from the outside layer of the stacks of fired bricks went into the building of the Smallfield telephone exchange. Is the exchange still there? It was a house on Plough Lane in behind the shops when I lived in the village.

The brickyard was down the road off Plough Road next to the house called The Orchard houses built over what was the brick yard I know Peter & Janet well and pleased to here they are both ok. A lot of pre war houses in Smallfield were built of Kings bricks but it closed after about two seasons after the war. Dennis Stenning
