The Sompting General Supply Stores.

West Street c1955
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

I have a photocopy of a photograph of the General Supply Stores, Sompting, dated around 1913, showing the owners, J and A White, proudly standing outside, one with a little dog at his feet, the other holding his bicycle. They were my grandfather, Walter John White and his brother, Alfred. My father, John Alfred Kelsey White, was born at the Stores in 1913. The photograph shows the Stores very much as it was in 1955, although the part next to the wall on the left of the shop has not been built yet. There is an advert for the Worthing Red Book in the window and a sign for Nectar Tea hanging outside.

RE: RE: The Sompting General Supply Stores.

My father Harry Maidment lived at West Terrace, West Street, Sompting in 1946. I never got to know him as my mother Emelda Collins nee Cooper put me up for adoption in 1948. Last June, I traced my mother and have visited her on more than one occasion and on one of these visits, i was lucky enough to drive down West Street whereupon she pointed out where my father lived at the time of my birth.
I would like to know if anyone in the Sompting area can assist me in finding Harry or any one related to him so that I can bring closure to this 60 year old mystery? Thank you.
