KENNYLANDS CAMP SCHOOL
My best friend and I attended Suttons Secondary Boys School in Hornchurch Essex, and both of us were fortunate to be chosen to attend a two month summer term at Kennylands, situated at Sonning Common Berkshire. Actually we were both lucky twice and attended two years in succession. The Camp was beautifully laid out in two seperate halves, divided by a central dining hall and a flag pole. I didn't realize until I arrived at camp that the 'other half' of the camp was for girls.
No entry to the girls' half was permitted under the threat of being expelled. The only exceptions were to attend church on Sundays and when parents visited. We were required to attend ballroom dancing lessons each week and many of us lads would likely never have learned to dance properly without these lessons taught by Mrs Gibbs the headmistress. We played all kinds of sports and also did normal school work. The community living taught us many values that would come in handy later in life. This part of the world was a wonderful place for boys and girls from the "Big Smoke", or even the suburbs, to live together in a well run camp. Many of us have rekindled friendships since those days through a website for prior students. We loved the beauty of the countryside, the old churches and the local pub "The Bird In Hand". If you were a student at Kennylands check in on the website and keep in touch with other ex-student members who have a special love for Sonning Common to this day. Sadly the school has been demolished to make room for a Seniors' Residence, However Kennylands will be remembered through the generous donation of a lovely bench for the Seniors which is inscribed with the name of the school.

RE: RE: KENNYLANDS CAMP SCHOOL
Yes I went to Kennylands Camp School, I think it must have been in 1948. I was at Braintree Secondary Modern at the time and very much a country boy from Little Bardfield in Essex. I can recall with great pleasure the dancing activities and the classroom explanations of the development of village structures. We seemed to do a lot of walking around the area and I know I thought the food was wonderful. Sweets came off the ration while I was at Kennylands but since I had no money it was a non event for me. I was not interested in the sporting activities but did my party piece at the 'concert' that was arranged one night, and joined a very small group with one of the teachers who played some classical music on a wind up gramaphone. I still think it was a very good educational activity even if we were not allowed anywhere near the girls! I have a couple of very poor photos someone took while I was there.

Hi nice to see Kennilands featured and memories of Mrs Gibbs. I never knew that I had a left and a right foot until I met her. I just thought they were feet, one on each side.
I can remember ' Dinky Two Steps' and was it the 'Military March or one step ?'
Then of course the film show, was that on Sunday's . Yes, we were kept apart from the girls, but at that age I was only really coming to terms with the thought that girls could be very attractive, but they didn't play much cricket, so it was difficult to see how they could fit into one's life
Mind you, I forget the name of my House Master but there was a lot of male and female giggling issuing from his room some nights, so I guess the had overcome the cricket problem.
I was there either 49, or 50 . I still think that was the most useful period of schooling I ever undertook. The staff did a first class job and if there are any around to read this 'WELL DONE'

RE: RE: KENNYLANDS CAMP SCHOOL
Hi Keith, thank you for reading my story. I was last at Kennylands in autumn 1948 so we missed each other. Kennylands has an old students' Alumni, enter Kennylands Camp School into Google and pick the MyFamily website. I'm a member, no big fees, just a great group of past students. But only a few from our era.
Regards,
Denny

RE: RE: KENNYLANDS CAMP SCHOOL
I was at Kennylands from 1953 to 1957, one of the lucky ones to be selected to attend as the first group to go for the full 4 years of senior school. I remember running home from school to beg my parents to let me go. I loved Kennylands.
I now maintain the school database for all the years the school was open - 1940-1980 and can be reached at maureenc42@aol.com
Please contact me with your name, address, DOB, and house you were in and also let me know any names of teachers and other pupils that you remember.
Kennylanders are scattered all over the world but no matter how far=flung we are, we all have a common bond that remains ver strong.
