Re: Tony Bros Ice Cream

I remember Tony Bros ice cream parlour off Acton High Street. On some Sundays my father would take me for a treat for a cornet or wafer scooped out of the big drum on the counter, it was always after giving our dog Sally a run either in Acton Park or on the scrubbs next to the prison. We lived in East Acton off Old Oak Road. 1963 stands out as it snowed at Christmas. We walked up to Acton Park with a sledge my dad had made, and had a great day sliding down the slope opposite Uxbridge Road till it got dark. I was so tired he had to drag me on the sledge halfway back. It was a great place to live with tree-lined streets. There was more a sense of freedom then.
Does anyone remember the cinema on the corner of Acton Circus which was a roundabout then? My sister took me to see Cliff Richard in 'Summer Holiday' at the Saturday morning pictures. It was turned into a bowling ally, and a friend of mine helped rip the seats out, a sad day.

RE: RE: Re: Tony Bros Ice Cream

I remember Tony's well too. I used to go to Acton to buy a bulk load of their spearmint lollies. You can't buy them anywhere now. I lived in South Ealing. Tony Bros used to sell their ice-cream around our estate. When I heard him coming I used to run home as fast as I could to ask if I could have one. The answer was normally "No", lol. My mum said I could hear the ice-cream van pulling out of their yard in Acton!

RE: RE: Re: Tony Bros Ice Cream

I too remember Tony Bros of Acton, as a kid I worked for an ice cream company in Greenford, Toni Ice Cream, run by a Stella and Ron Valente. So in a way they were the opposition, but many times I used to go with Ron to Acton to pick up boxes of cones from the cones and wafer factory in Acton but I can't remember the name, and sometimes we would pop in to see the owner of Tony Bros, God! How ice cream used to taste in them days! I used to help filling up the blocks at Ron's small factory in Greenford where he had 7 vans as well. The way they used to make icream then was truly yum yum. I have never ever bought an ice cream off an ice cream van since the late 1970s as it's not the way ice cream should be made, it's full of air and most drivers put cream soda in it with the cream mix. How do I know? Because I used to work for Mr Softee in the 1970s and I was told that was the way to do it if you wanted to make money and to this day they are all still doing it, kids of today haven't got a clue what real ice cream tastes like.
