HAPPY DAYS

The Village, South Road c1950

We lived in South Ockendon from 1957 until the 1960s and they were the happiest years of my life. My father was Mr Edward Bailey who was caretaker of Benyon School and the family lived in the school house, Mum, Ann, David and me Joy. Dad was a lay reader at St Nicholas Church on the green and he was in the choir and Church Warden too. I went to school at Benyon and then Culverhouse, had a wonderful childhood and now in my sixties look back over happy memories.

RE: RE: HAPPY DAYS

I was a choir boy at St. Nicholas church in the 60's and have very fond memories of those times. I remember singing at some of the weddings and sadly some funerals. Viewing Kenton village from the bell tower once with Father Brown's permission, and many times with a best friend. School friends were Bob Pearce, Keith Thompson the now actor, Phillip Davis Pip, Brenda Goguen, Linda Spice, Kevin and sister Dawn Young, Ram Ravji and many more. I went to Mardyke School and then to Culverhouse. I lived in Cullan Grove, just off Broxbourne Drive. My mother Joyce worked in the sweet shop and I can remember getting a bag of broken biscuits from the bakers shop. I think the pub was the Knight of Aveley on the corner of Cawdor Avenue, they were really good times.
