Nostalgic memories of South Shields's local history

Share your own memories of South Shields and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My dad worked at the middle docks just about 1956 and in them days the shipyards would have their fortnight summer holidays all at once. My dad would wake me up at 6am to get ready, have my toast and jam, then it was off to the little beach to get our deck chairs and tent for changing into our trunks. We would be there every day of the fortnight - all the family would be there, my granda and nana would never ...see more
Hello. My grandparents and family lived at No 5 Whitehall Street opposite from West Park. The houses were originally `well to do` and had been transformed into upper and lower flats. The fronts had bay windows. I remember the street seemed quite steep to me as a child and had a railing down at the bottom where the street crossed Stanhope Road. I run a website about HMS Edinburgh and have been sent a poem written by a barmaid from the Sea Hotel that was written around 1938-1942 called the Edinburgh Boys.I am assuming this is the same hotel? Can someone confirm whether it is, or if not is there another. Is the author still with us and if so are there any contact info? I am updating the site and am looking for material. Any help would be appreciated.
My nana was born in Orange Street, South Shields. Can anyone tell me where Orange Street was situated in South Shields? My nana was born 1892, Alice Duffie, sisters Mary and Isabella. Any help would be most appreciated, as yet again I have hit a brick wall thanks x

As a small child I used to sleep in a tiny attic bedroom where my mum Doris Goodall (who came from Jarrow) used to sleep in when she went to Whitburn for her holidays, with her family, she shared the tiny bedroom with her sister and brother in one bed when they were small ...see more
