Southall And Norwood Green Schools 1950s And 1960s

A Memory of Southall.

Miss Ball was headmistress, infants teacher was Miss Lidstone, and first year teacher was Miss Curtain when I was at Clifton Road school in the early 1950s. My best friend was Alan Newall, whatever happened to him? I remember ice slides on the playground, outdoor toilets, twisting stairs, and the Lollypop shop opposite.

I was among the first year at the new George Tomlinson Junior Mixed, at Top Locks, where we did country dancing in the field. Miss Davis was sweet, Miss Roberts was strict, and Mr. Kersley tried to teach us football. Barge children would sometimes join our class for a day or two. My friends were from the Havelock Road estate or Norwood Green (Melbury, Minterne, Shaftesbury Avenues, and Tentelow Lane, etc): Susan, Sylvia, Marian, Cary, Avril, Vivian, Jessica, Keith, David, Donny, Michael... Then there was Marta, a blond pigtailed refugee from the Hungarian uprising of 1956.

Best wishes to all.

Hi. I lived in Devonshire Road Southall from my birth in1956 until 1966 when we moved to Hampshire. I think I remember going to Lady Margaret School and there was a girl called Valerie Newall. Would have been about 1963/64. Just wondered if she was related to Peter Newall who you knew?
I was a teacher at Norwood Green 1970-72. I was the most junior teacher in the school but I learnt a lot from staff and pupils.
As a child I lived above a grocers shop called Platts Stores Ltd, on the corner of Fern Lane Heston and Crosslands Ave, Norwood Green where my father was manager. There was a newsagent/sweetshop and a branch of the wine merchant Stowells, where my best friend Sylvia Merton lived, in our little parade of 3 shops. I attended Norwood Green Infants and Junior Schools (headmaster Mr Wilkes) then after the scholarship went to Southall County Grammar, taking the 120 bus each day. Favourite teacher there was Miss D Brookes, English. My parents were Methodists and we went to Heston Methodist Church, where I attended Sunday School and passed various Scripture exams, and joined the 1st Heston Girls Life Brigade. I remember having piano lessons as a child too, taking various RSM examinations in London. At senior school I joined the choir and dramatic society, I recall taking part in 3 plays - The Devil's Disciple and Pygmalion and The Importance of Being Ernest. I was also part of the school's tennis team for 3 years.
Lots of memories, happy days, all so long ago now I am in my 80th year! Rita Rumble (now Burgess).
