The Old Cinema
This is actually the old cinema on The Bourne looking towards Southgate station.
Re: Southgate Swimming Pool And Halliwick
The 'crippled' school was on the corner where Green Lanes becomes Ridge Avenue. Coming from Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill Green Dragon Lane [where my family moved to in 1955] runs off to the left and another road ran alongside of the school. We left the area in 1960/61 and the school was still there then. Do you remember the garden fete held annually in the grounds?

The Cherry Tree was my main watering hole as I had so many friends in the area. Stan Chrees from Oakleigh Road, Bernard Downes, Edwin Hodson, to name but a few. Oh the days before mindless fruit machines, when pubs were for drinking and making friends.
The beer was good, but the Old Forge restaurant was superb. A real posh nosher as Stan used to call it; their food was just so excellent.
I had many girlfriends from the area. Margaret from The Bourne and Christine from The Mall. I do hope that life has been good to them.
Had the photo been of my era, I am sure that my Riley would have been in the photograph.
No mention has been made of the "stocks" opposite on the village green. I wonder if they are still there or have been victims of mindless vandalism.

Oakwood Park
I was born in Southgate in 1938 and lived near Oakwood Park until my teens. In the early years we were often taken to the Park to play on the swings etc. I remember the boating pond, and the tea house where, when the war had ended, we were able to buy ice creams which were delicious! Later on I played tennis on the courts in the Park. I also remember the wonderful poplar trees which were all along the paths. I also recall that there was an 'ice house' somewhere in the Park near the tea house Oakwood Park was a great place and we spent many happy times there.
Growing up in Southgate
We moved to Southgate from Muswell Hill when I was 3. I remember going into Lees Stores (I think that was the name of the shop) in Chase Side where we needed ration books to buy sweets. I went to St Andrews primary school which was very old and rather frightening! For Junior school I went to Eversley Junior School and then to Oakwood Secondary Modern. My sister passed the 11 plus and went to Minchenden Grammar School- I remember feeling very inferior! I also have memories of the annual flower show held in Broomfield Park - walking in Arnos Park and playng in Oakwood Park which was a few hundred yards from where I lived. There were 2 ponds in Oakwood Park the "dirty"pond and the new pond where you could paddle. and swings and roundabouts. Also a rather grand refreshment building where we bought ice creams. Memories of Greater London
Cinema
I was born in Palmers Green in Jan 1940 and lived at 18 Farndale Ave. from 1948-1960. I went to Winchmore Hill Secondary Modern from 1951-1953. I remember the Capitol Cinema and the Saturday morning film club which was a part of most kids' lives at the time. It was either the Capitol or the Palmadium depending what was on. Sometimes there would be the usual Cowboy and Indian stuff or films about German spies, which would fire up the blood so that when we all piled out at the end we would run round the corner, over the new river bridge on Fords Grove and into the small woodland at the back of the Capitol where we would split into warring factions and recreate what we had just seen on screen. Does anyone recall the name of the Timber Yard near to the Police Station before it became Travis Perkins?

The ABC
The photo featuring the ABC bakery brings back memories of being met from school (St Angelas - just round the corner in Oakthorpe Road) by my mum at half terms or holidays and taken for tea as a treat to celebrate the start of the holidays! The counter, if you sat down to eat used to be at the back of the shop. If I was lucky , a friend used to join us! It was the only time I was allowed to eat in public whilst wearing my school uniform.It was very strict back then!
