While researching my family history I came across this article in the Eastern Counties Advertiser 18th October 1879. It is the coroner's report relating to my great great grandfather's brother Thomas Brassett 1815 - 1879 an agricultural labourer of Southminster Essex. He was born 2nd August 1871 and baptised 5th August the son of Thomas and Amelia.
Southminster
Found Drowned - On Saturday afternoon an inquest was held at the White Hart Inn, by Mr W Codd, touching the death of Thomas Brassett aged 64 years of age, whose body was found in a ditch early on Thursday morning last, near Plumbro House, on the Southminster marshes. The witnesss examined were Benjamin Boosey and George Sams; but there was no evidence how the man came into the ditch., although the previous evening he was seen reclining on the grass by the side of it. The Jury returned a verdict of 'Found drowned, but under what circumstances there is no evidence to show'. How times have changed!!

RE: Jacqueline Oldman
Hello I read your article on Thomas Brasset with great interest having visited Southminster yesterday and and talking to my husband about both Eliza Harriet Brasset and her sister Susannah. Elizawas the daughter of Thomas Brasset 1859 -1943 and Mary Anne Clarke 1862-1931. Thomas was the son of John 1818-1897 and Harriet Bishop 1817-1896 and John was also a son of Thomas & Amelia. Eliza was my husbands grandmother she married Herbert William Chaplin a policeman so somewhere along that line we are related therfore I was wondering if you have any more information on the family history please and if possible you could help us we are very busy on the Chaplin side at the moment but have most of the names of the Brassets.
Kind Regards
Chris Chaplin

RE: Jacqueline Oldman
I have read your and Chris Chaplin's words about Thomas Brassett. On my side of the family I have been tracing Frances Brassett (1811 - 1880) who may have been a brother to Thomas. She married a John Newman (who died in 1844) and then my Great granfather William Drain in 1846 in Southminster. William was living with Frances in the White Hart between 1874 and 1881 (at least) William was the Innkeeper, he also for a short period of time earlier on lived at Plumbro.
I have still to establish much about Frances life before 1840, but recognize the Brassett family was very small in Essex at that time and may have come from elsewhere, although records always show that she was born in Southminster around 1811.

RE: Jacqueline Oldman
Frances Brassett ( I have her born 06/04.1809 and baptised 30/04/1809 as Brasted) was one of 7 children of Thomas Brasted 1780 - 1859 and Amelia Andrews 1781 - 1840. The spelling of the name changed continuously throughout their lives and among siblings! Thomas was the son of Thomas Brasted 1758 - 1812 and Lucy Rayner 1752 - 1822. All lived in Southminster Essex. My connection is through Thomas 1780's brother Daniel Brasted 1806 - 1873
Frances married Jonathan Newman on 30 Sep 1831 at Southminster and they had 2 children Frances Mary and Susannah.
Then following Jonathan's death she married William in 1846 as you already know.
I would love to learn more of your line.
