St. Blazey - Luxulyan - Newgate
My Birth Certificate shows I was born at Newgate Lockingate Luxulyan and as a child lived briefly at St. Blazey. My family came to Australia in 1949 on the SS Arawa and we now reside in Sydney. I returned to Cornwall three years ago for a brief holiday with family there. Since returning to Australia I have been trying to locate Newgate and Lockingate on google maps without success. Can anyone tell me whether the township name of Lockingate was changed to Lockengate somewhere along the line and give me any information about that area or a map reference that will allow me to locate it on the map. Thank you for your assistance. Incidentally my maiden name is FRITH Shirley

RE: RE: St. Blazey - Luxulyan - Newgate
Hi
Lockingate is now known as Lockengate and is situated 2 miles from Bugle, in the St Austell area.
I am trying to research the history of the origin of Lockengate without much success, so any assistance would be helpful.
We think it was called 'lock in gate' due to it possibly being a holding area for prisons on route to Bodmin Jail.
Many Thanks for any response

RE: RE: St. Blazey - Luxulyan - Newgate
Hi,
I was evacuated to a cottage on Conce Moor Lockengate during the Second World War in 1942 and I used to walk to the smallholding of Newgate Farm to collect eggs and milk and other farm produce. Just up from this farm was the old Wireless Station where many Poles worked. When I was there I seem to remember a Maurice Yates who was the tenant of this smallholding. The cottage I lived in was a typical two up and two down, slate roof cottage with a huge back garden which led down a lane straight on to Conce Moor, Lockengate was just half a mile away across the moorland. In front of the cottage was a field and to the back of the cottage to the main road was another field both growing corn which at harvest time we stooked. There was a well and a shed at the bottom of the garden used as a toilet! There was no electricity. The view from the cottage looked to the clay tips at Bugle and Helmans Tor
I am at present writing up my own experiences and looking for old photographs of Newgate Farm, Wells and Clay Pits.
