Notre Dame Convent School, St. Helens

Church Street 1952, St Helens

I used to attend the Notre Dame Convent School (or Grammar School, as it was sometimes called). I was from Warrington on an 11+ scholarship and had to travel in by bus every morning - then walk past the Town Hall and down Church Road to the convent. The headmistress was a nun called Sister Catherine. There was a History teacher called Miss Pierpont. Sometime in the early 1950s the convent school closed down - I believe it burned down, but I'm not certain. I wonder if anyone has a photo of any part of the convent? There was a playgroung which was walled in from the street. Inside the walls, at the end of the playground there was a grotto with a statue of Our Lady in it. If anyone has a photo of any part of the school, I would love to have a copy and would be willing to buy it and pay for postage etc. I live in Canada now (near Edmonton, Alberta). My eMail address is Thank you! Would love to hear from you!

RE: Notre Dame Convent School, St. Helens

I realise your post was few years ago but I've only just seen it! Notre Dame Convent is no more . . it was replaced by housing 10 or 15 or more years ago. The reason I write is because it became annexed to St Helens Technical College and was the Mining Department where apprentices were taught the academic elements of their courses. I recall the gardens and the Grotto as I studied there, on and off, between 1974 - 1976 and have fond memories of it, especially in the very hot weather when we pulled the large windows back to create a breeze. Of my 5 female aunts, one (Winifred 'Winnie' Hagan) was bright enough to have attended Notre Dame and we spoke frequently about the place.

RE: Notre Dame Convent School, St. Helens

I attended Notre Dame Grammar School from 1959 -1964, it was a large new school at Eccleston, and I remeber Sister Catherine who was still headmistress. I also travelled from Warrington. Unfortunately I have no photos as all my school magazines and records were accidentally destroyed after I married. I now live in County Antrim N.Ireland and have tried to locate info on Notre Dame and my schoolfriends without success.
