Hampshire memories
I don't remember the year but I think it was in the 1950s. Where exactly was the Ferndown Zoo? I have a photo of one of my cousins taken with a goat. I really don't remember much about it, I just know I went at least three times. Please help.

(Not just 1955, probably most of the 1950s.)
When my mother was a little girl, she was looked after by a nanny, who in her later years lived at Fairways, a bungalow at the end of Carroll Avenue. In the 1950s when I was very young, we used to visit what seemed a large bungalow in a very large garden... [more]

Hi, my name is Richard Bierdrager. I went to Hurn Court School from 1975 to 1980, after which I returned back to my home country of Thailand and finished my secondary education with a high school diploma. The friends I had there were: Mark Adams, Paul Belvoir, Paul Shields, Robert Slavery, Paul Ankersmit, John and David Furby, Graham Redpath-Stevens, Micheal Gavey,... [more]

I went to Hurn Court School from 1977 to 1982. I have fond memories of wandering the beautiful grounds to get away from the madding crowds.

Hi, my name is Mark Adams, I also went to Hurn School with Ben, Paul Sheil, Paul Belviour and Richard Beerdragger. I went up to the school also and was disapointment to find that it had been turned into appartments. This is where I had the best of my school years. Do you remember the headmaster's name, Mr Morris and some... [more]

I was at Hurn Court (School) from 1975 - 1981.
I had many wonderfull years there, it was a great place to grow up, with all the acres of lawns and woodland around the place.
It has now been turned into very expensive appartments.

In 1956 I was an apprenticed grocer with a very poor wage. My passion was fishing and if I went to see the river bailiff, a Bob Olley, after work to pay for a license, he would often say 'Go and do your fishing and don't worry about the license'. Bob felt that to make me pay for a half day... [more]

My sister remembers cycling to Gaunts Common just after my great-grandfather died, my great-grandmother stayed at a house there, there was an old railway carraige in the garden which was used as a caravan, and my grandmother stayed there for a while. The owners were probably Steele-Bartlett-Sweatland or Chalk, all family names. Also there was a photo of my great-great-grandfather Edward... [more]

The bank on the corner has become the Midland Bank, while across The Square the familiar names of Boots the Chemists and Foyle's Library appear on shop signs. Between them the draper Albert Hyland features a range of blouses and underwear in his window display. The centre of The Square has become a car park.

Wimborne Photographic Memories
Less than 20 years have passed since No 52472 was taken, but motor vehicles in the High Street and The Square now outnumber horse-drawn ones by nine to one. Note also that Buddens tailors shop on the corner of The Square has been demolished and replaced by the London Joint City Bank, established in 1836.

The design of the Number 24 Bournemouth bus and the Morris Minor van opposite it take us firmly into the post-war years. On the far left, two of the three shops in this corner of The Square are now occupied by chemists, as one of them is today. The car park indicated at the corner of Mill Lane (left) was on the site now occupied by Safeways.
